Review: Staz - Loved the manga, love the anime just as much
Review: Short but Sweet - Staz C. Blood is the vampire boss of the West Demon world but he has very little interest in expanding, or running, his territory and much prefers to indulge his obsession with anime, manga and computer games. One day an ordinary human girl, Fuyumi Yanagi, finds herself in his territory and Staz is immediately struck with love at first sight. Unfortunately Fuyumi is accidently killed and becomes a ghost, causing Staz to vow to bring her back to life. 'Blood Lad' is a very entertaining series that is very funny throughout, has some reasonable, if brief, action and some good characters. The anime is an adaption of an ongoing manga so, as with many such adaptions, you shouldn't expect a resolution in the ten (eleven with the OVA) episodes that are of the anime but I think the show is good enough that many anime fans should enjoy it. The anime remains very faithful to the original manga for the most part with only a few additional or cut scenes here and there throughout the series. The series does have some brief action here and there but the series is mostly a comedy and I personally find it to be very funny. Due to the main character being a massive otaku, there are also quite a few references to other anime, such as 'Dragon Ball' and 'Laputa: Castle in the Sky', and it can be fun to try to spot them. Although the animation of the series is a little low budget in some places, it nonetheless remains very colourful and fun, and seems to suit the style of the series quite well. The DVD contains both the dub and sub version of the series and although I probably feel the original Japanese is slightly better, the English dub is still reasonably good. All the English voices are relatively good but the stand-out performers are easily Johnny Yong Bosch, as Braz D. Blood, and Richard Epcar, as Wolf-Daddy, who do excellent jobs with their characters. The only voice in the English dub that I wasn't a fan of was Ben Diskin as Wolf who I felt was a little too deep for the character (although the voice was perfect for when he was transformed). For bonus features, the set includes clean versions of the opening and closing animations and the outtakes for the English dub that are very funny. Overall I feel that 'Blood Lad' is well worth a high four stars.
