At first, I didn’t like the results. I didn’t realize that it has little to no nutrients and minerals. Once I learned that I started trying out different additives to the coco coir to give it a little fertilizer. I didn’t want to use harsh chemical fertilizers; I wanted to use something gentler. Here’s where the worm castings come in. By mixing the worm castings in it gave it just the right kick that seedlings and cuttings need. My success rate doubled, if not more. I also mix some perlite and vermiculite in to give it drainage and to loosen it up. For me, this process and mixture work best. I hydrate 3 bricks at a time. I stand them up vertically in a 5-gallon bucket. Add 2 quarts of water and let it sit overnight. The next day I flip the bricks (sometimes they come apart, so I try to make the top of them even) and add 3 quarts more water and let that sit overnight too. For me, that usually does the trick. I then break it up. I add 1.75 quarts of perlite, 1.75 quarts of vermiculite, and the same amount of worm castings. Once seedlings take hold, about 2 to 3 weeks after sprouting I’ll add water soluble fertilizer. Same for the cuttings. I don’t give them much to start out with and increase it over time as you would any normal plant.
