You really need the hard, green plastic cutting mats for that. This Simicity board is for dressmaking so that you can lay your fabric on it for cutting out with scissors. You can pin to it and use a spiked tracing wheel on it for flat pattern cutting on paper, but it is not for using a rotary cutter as you would for quilting. Hope that helps! **Q: what is the board made from?** A: It's cardboard, not as good quality as my last one which lasted over 20 years, but I haven't seen a good quality one. Now if they made it as good as the box it came in it would be a totally diff story. If you order one prepare to be amazed at the wrapping. But it's ok for the price I guess. **Q: To correct my earlier question. as you can only use this board to measure straight lines & a self-healing mat to cut out why call it a cutting mat?** A: Funnily enough, I have just been using mine again this week!! It's just a cutting board for material when you are dressmaking. I don't know where the self-healing mat comes from. I haven't tried laying on it to sort my back out, maybe I should. All that aside, it does the job very well in my small flat, where I put it on the bed to use it. **Q: Is the grid in inches or centimetres? Or is it printed on both sides (metric on one & imperial on the other)?** A: It shows inches and centimeters on the top the reverse is plain brown card. Finding this one was a real blessing and I have already used it successfully. It provides a much bigger area than a normal table or protects your carpet when cutting out material. It's large size also means you can spread your material out flat to allow accurate cutting. It is made of thick substantial cardboard which folds in a concertina style for storage and is lightweight. It has both metric and imperial measurement guides and also cross grain guide lines.
