The cables will be 1.5 so putting more than 3000w would cause a fire risk. Be careful with electricity. **Q: Does the cable have to be fully unwound when in use?** A: It depends on how much current you want to put through it. It tells you on the reel itself what is the safe load - unwound = 13A / 3120W : wound = 5A / 1200W **Q: Also, do we have to take into account electrical items like a power tools surge or spiking and do we have to double the tools wattage outputs etc etc?** A: Passing electricity thru a cable causes heat, the greater the load the more heat created. Power surge and spiking should be considerd however small surges and spikes should not cause damaged (heat) to a wound cable on a reel providing the load isn't greater than the maximum load (960w). Not to sure about the second question but to be safe remove all the cable. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Extension Lead *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 27 March 2018* Excellent extension lead with 4 sockets. However total rating is still limited to 13 amps when fully unwound from the drum. When cable is still wound on the drum the rating is reduced to 5 amps. It is quite hard to rotate the drum with the little knob to feed the cable back on the drum and unfortunately the sockets rotate with the drum so it is necessary to disconnect anything plugged into it to adjust the free cable length. (it would need to be electrically much more complex to have static sockets while the drum rotated.I specifically bought this extension lead because it was sturdy, and the unwound and wound ratings were identified on the information plate. Many extension lead drums gave a rating but did not identify that it only applied to fully unwound nor give a partially wound rating for the lead. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A surprisingly decent little box of wire. I've always had the normal Drum type long extension leads, and only took a chance on this as it was a good price. It's great. So easy to wind back up, thermal cutout, and 4 sockets.
