You have to boil water separately. Having said that, this, to me, is a fantastic piece of kit.....so well made and makes great coffee! Worth every penny!! **Q: Does it have another lid to keep the coffee in that cup, without piling the filter and grinder etc back on top?** A: The thin circle on the very top of the unit (red circle on the black maker; black circle on the red maker) comes off and can serve as a lid for the cup.
