## Description

By now, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have amassed such a fund of goodwill with moviegoers that any new onscreen pairing brings nearly reflexive smiles. In You've Got Mail , the quintessential boy and girl next door repeat the tentative romantic crescendo that made Sleepless in Seattle , writer-director Nora Ephron's previous excursion with the duo, a massive hit. The prospective couple do actually meet face to face early on but Mail otherwise repeats the earlier feature's gentle, extended tease of saving its romantic resolution until the final, gauzy shot. The underlying narrative is an even more old-fashioned romantic pas de deux that is casually hooked to a newfangled device. The script, cowritten by the director and her sister, Delia Ephron, updates and relocates the Ernst Lubitsch classic, The Shop Around the Corner , to contemporary Manhattan, where Joe Fox (Hanks) is a cheerfully rapacious merchant whose chain of book superstores is gobbling up smaller, more specialized shops such as the children's bookstore owned by Kathleen Kelly (Ryan). Their lives run in close parallel in the same idealized neighbourhood yet they first meet anonymously, online, where they gradually nurture a warm, even intimate correspondence. As they begin to wonder whether this e-mail flirtation might lead them to be soul mates, however, they meet and clash over their colliding business fortunes. It's no small testament to the two stars that we wind up liking and caring about them despite the inevitable (and highly manipulative) arc of the plot. Although their chemistry transcended the consciously improbable romantic premise of Sleepless , enabling director Ephron to attain a kind of amorous soufflé, this time around there's a slow leak that considerably deflates the affair. Less credulous viewers will challenge Joe's logic in prolonging the concealment of his online identity from Kathleen, and may shake their heads at Ephron's reinvention of Manhattan as a spotless, sun-dappled wonderland where everybody lives in million-dollar apartments and colour co-ordinates their wardrobes for cocktail parties. --Sam Sutherland DVD Special Features Interactive Menus Scene Access Trailer Commentary with Nora Ephron and Lauren Shuler-Donner HBO First Look Special: A Conversation with Nora Ephron Discover New York's Upper West Side (11 selectable clips) 2-Channel Music Only Language in Dolby Digital 5.1: English Subtitles: English/Arabic/English for the hearing impaired

Review: One of the best Romantic Comedy films - This is one of my top favourite films, I have to watch it a few times a year. If you love the charm of Tom Hanks it is a lovely easy film to watch with great music throughout. I would certainly recommend it. It is perfect for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. It is also a good film for showing New York throughout the seasons, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring etc. Tom Hanks and Megan Ryan are perfectly cast together and the rest of the cast add to the story. If you love Sleepless in Seattle it is a perfect partner. It's one of those films that if you love it you wish to could find more of the same to watch.
Review: You've got mail - This has to be my all time classic favorite film with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Joe Fox (NY152) meets Kathleen Kelly (Shop Girl) in a chat room online. Unaware to each other that they will become rivals in business. Joe runs Fox & sons Superstore books while Kathleen owns her little book shop "Shop around the corner". His job is to illuminate the opposition, her job is to keep her little shop open against the big bad Fox. When they agree to meet, Joe is the first to find out that Kathleen is Shop Girl. Kathleen eventually closes her shop, but a magical thing happens she keeps bumping into Joe and they become a lot closer. She has already fallen in love with NY152 and it isn't until the end do they actually get to meet each other. A must see if you haven't already

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Delightful 90s Romcom
*by C***A on 29 January 2019*

The product description is great and the DVD I received is exactly as described (subtitles, extras). The film itself is a delightful romcom from the 90s, the decade when the genre really took off. It probably deserves to be called a classic by now. Meg Ryan, the queen of 90s romance, is supremely likable as the owner of the independent little bookshop, Tom Hanks is equally likable as her online love interest and offline business rival. Their online relationship through an exchange of emails in a chat room seems archaic only 20 years later, but it's a nice bit of nostalgia for those old enough to remember the days before social media. Yes, it's predictable, the story is contrived and the characters and their lifestyles are too good to be true, but hey, that's what you expect from this kind of a feelgood film, right? As romcoms go, this one is right up there with the best - the kind of film that will let you forget the worries of the day for a while and leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling. Definitely worth owning if you enjoy a bit of fluffy escapism.
