When setting up a new aquarium and changing part of the water, the aquarium needs healthy bacteria to clean itself and to break down pollutants quickly. JBL Denitrol Aquarium Starter contains highly active, useful bacteria which break down ammonia and nitrite in the water. At the same time, fish excretions and other waste are removed. When using JBL Denitrol (ideally shortly after adding JBL Biotopol), high quantities of bacteria are immediately added to the aquarium water. When the first fish are added the next day, these bacteria are fed and begin to multiply. If you're looking and needing a bit of help cycling buy this now. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eliminate nitrites *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 18 November 2025* After struggling with high nitrites and water change after water change I put two bottles of this in my 950 ltr tank and left it alone 2 days later nitrites reading nearly none existent I expect tomorrow they will be at zero.Fish looking amazing and now I know which products do and dont work. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does what it says on the tin. *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 8 May 2017* I've been sceptical of bacteria in a bottle but decided to give it a go when setting up a 350L planted tank. I already had a couple of small tanks and was moving house at the time so I needed to be able to get the fish in the new tank ASAP. This was the perfect product for that.Within a few (3-4) days the tank had fully cycled. Daily tests showed the ammonia (from the soil) drop, nitrite rise and then fall, leaving behind a large amount of nitrate which cleared with a big water change. This only worked as well as it did for me because the soil I used leached a fair amount of ammonia for the bacteria to feed on. Make sure you have a source of ammonia either by adding it manually, through aquarium soil, or by adding a few fish as per bottle instructions.
