The blade is sharp enough to use as a razor for opening bags of compost, cutting string etc. I know that's not the point of them but it illustrates the razor like quality. They are comfortable but also quite small so, if like me you have large hands, then go for the 103s which are the largest and would probably still suit someone with medium hands. They have a very clean cutting action, with a satisfying 'clack' sound, and are equally good at snipping off flower heads or taking small branches from fruit trees. What does take a bit of getting used to however is the action. If you are used to the 'thumb flick' opening and closing action of Felco and ersatz Felco secateurs then you might find the opening and closing action of the Okatsune secateurs takes a bit of getting used to. The clip at the base needs to be flicked open and then flicked closed after use. Here is a word to the wise: don't get the skin of your hand caught in the closing mechanism! The spring snaps it back into place and there is potential for a real 'ouch!'- or worse - moment. Having been stupid enough to catch my hand three times I now flick them open and closed by pushing the base of the secateurs against my hip. The 101 is just a little smaller, and the blades are marginally smaller than the 103, but there is little difference in the actual cutting capacity between the two. I purchased both, used both and liked each of them. If I am working long periods on material that is not at the upper limits of hand pruning, I prefer the 101 for the slightly smaller size and improved ergonomics. I am kind of a shrimp at 5'-6", but my hands are not small. I gifted my 101 to my 5'3" daughter and she loves it. Good tools, either one. **Q: where are these Okatsune 103s made?** A: It is made in Japan. However, sellers who sell fake products are constantly appearing. If you see an item for less than 30$, be sure to check the seller's information. If it is a Japanese seller with a good reputation, there is no problem, but if it is not, be careful. **Q: The 103 (medium) is 20mm larger than the 101 (small) bypass pruner, is that just in the handle, or is the cutting blade bigger too?** A: The 101 blade set is slightly smaller than the 103, but the difference is slight, and at the operational level in the field, you probably won't find many cuts that only the 101 cannot make/103 will make. It is more the ergonomics of the user's hand that will determine the better performance of Small vs. Medium tool. If I was working on 1/2" cuts all day long, I would prefer the small tool, and I have strong hands.
