I use the mat for a variety of exercises and find it supports well. I use for traditional ab exercises as well as using it for different push up variations like forearm planks and it's very sturdy for this. Soft still but firm enough to take the change in pressure **Q: Does the matt section only fold out i one direction (from the pictures, it's the wrong way) as the steeper part should be nearest your bottom?** A: Not entirely sure I know what you mean, but I have this mat and it only folds out as the photo shows, so the one way. So you sit on the folded out flat part, so the curved part fills in the curve of your lower back as it were. Personally I have found the curve too much for a full sit up and I just use it for crunches, where I do not go back completely onto my back. You have to sit on the flat part or as you lean back on your sit up the matt would just be pushed back by you, so thats why you sit on the flat bit using your own body as the weight to hold it in place.
