Review: Good for Keeping Compost Container Odor Down - I have a countertop compost container with a round lid that accepts these carbon filters. I don't replace them all that often because when I put kitchen scraps in it, I typically cover the scraps with coffee grounds, which effectively blocks any odors. I just purchased a second compost container, and will use it exclusively for kitchen scraps, so I will start replacing the filters regularly. They are a nice fit for my lid, but your mileage may vary, based on what type of compost container you have. One thing I have had happen with other brands is that the disk is too large for the lid, and the edges fold up. This allows for fruit flies to get into the compost material generating, you guessed it, more fruit flies. I fought with them for about three weeks trying to get their numbers under control before I realized where they were coming from. These filters seem to fit better than the ones I originally bought, so I don't have concerns that fruit flies will be an issue with these. Even if I replace the disk every two or three weeks, this pack will last me for several months, so it's a great bargain.

**Q: Can the filters be hand washed?**
A: Washing a carbon filter just washes the carbon off the fabric strands they are bound to.  You can’t “wash the odor out.”  Those reviewers who do this are just becoming “nose blind” to the odor coming from the bin.  If the filter no longer works and it is made of natural material and has no chemical binders, then it’s safe to dispose them by burning or putting them in the landfill.  If the fabric is a type of plastic, then it might be recyclable or it will have to go into a landfill.

**Q: Can you compost a spent filter or is it meant for the landfill?**
A: We have a compost pile and I would not put it in the compost pile.  
Landfill or burn it.

**Q: How does one replace the filters? i have a utopia stainless steel compostable bin. the filter is inaccessible within a closed system top.**
A: If this is the stainless steel model I purchased remove the lid real up and pinch the cartridge and pull down do the same to replace in reverse.

**Q: When i replaced the round filter in the lid, i found a second square filter behind it.  do i need to replace the square one as well?**
A: Yes, Epica seems to put the smaller square filter instead of the round filter for the top filter. Saving a few cents I guess. Round works better for top and bottom filters.
