I have two paperback books of his with classic covers from the seventies which I found online, The Shining and Salem's Lot, both of which I did like, but they're the only two. I read about seven others and I hated them. Now before anyone gets their noses out of joint, that's just me and this is not to start on a negative. It's just out the way. The one other book of his that I long wondered about, still wonder about which I was almost tempted to try, but the length and others that I read put me off, was IT. I still haven't got it yet, but I may at some point risk it.I don't know if anyone is aware of this but it was actually an idea that was brought to him by his then editor who suggested that he bring the monsters back one last time, all of them. The idea fascinated King and accepted the assignment. With that, he delivered this epic and so the rest I guess is all on him. It also took him five years to write.The thing with King is that I always found his tone almost sadistic, but I know he is actually just pessimistic in tone. I also saw the original It Mini-series, which I did like, but the second half, although I was fascinated by the kids as successful adults and being reunited didn't work as well. Possibly, the most memorable thing about it was Tim Curry as Pennywise, who nearly stole the show. He took the part and made it his own. Then, along comes this remake and I was dubious about it at first, but a part of me was still fascinated and I couldn't resist seeing what they had done with it as a completely different film and a modern update. It turned out to be a superior remake in every way.It is darker without a doubt, with a stunning and much stronger opening, surprising even that is was allowed to be left in. Looks like they don't mind breaking the rules sometimes after all in this day and age of pc and no harm to kids. It's better for it though. I think the kids were more likeable in this one, and you really are feeling their journey. Speaking of the kids though that brings me to my most personal thought of this adaption and why I liked it as much as I did. Indeed, why I was moved as much as I was.This story seems to be not just about childhood fears and monsters, but the other side of things too, albeit, childhood friendships. A lot of King's fiction seems to be about bullying and other horrible subjects which I personally have too much experience of, but It, even though it deals with that too, is also great about how strong childhood friendships can help you through bad times. Especially if your family is not great, friendships can save you and help you to overcome anything. When these kids pull together and have fun they're stronger and they make a good fighting force. I always found that rather touching and still do. Unfortunately, when I was a kid, I had no real friends, none that lasted anyway, and ones I did have turned out to be no more than troublemakers, so I was pretty much left to fight the fears I had back then all on my own. It's nice therefore to see these kids on this film coming together and kind of showing me what I might have missed out on back then. Yes, they might have their little fall-outs and bickering and disagreements here and there, but they get passed it and stick together. It helps them of course to battle the monstrous and chilling Pennywise.Yes, a word lastly about Pennywise here played brilliantly by Bill Skarsgard, who is six-foot-four and of course the younger brother I'm guessing of Alexander. He is quite simply brilliant. There is nothing more I can say about him that hasn't already been said. He has taken this role and made it HIS own. He was also able to give it such a creepy and intimidating treatment and interpretation.I have to say, I have never been overly keen on the love triangle/rivalry between Bill and Ben for Beverly, but that is again, because of my personal experiences as a kid. None of this however takes anything away from what is a cracking tale of monsters, childhood fears, tragedy and the strengths that we can find from simply having great friends. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars A very good take on the best Stephen King novel ever. *by G***I on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 January 2018* CASE AND DISCThe IT Blu ray comes in a very nice paper sleeve depicting the same design on the actual blu-ray case. I really did like the cover image as it‘s almost totally black with just some creepy details emerging from the dark, something that will really stand-out among your blu-ray collection.The movie disc presents a blue surface with the title on it that I didn‘t find very befitting: I would have preferred a color that reminded me more of the subject (maybe red or total black with a red writing on it).DISC CONTENTS AND MOVIEThe movie menu doesn‘t really impress you as it presents just one of the movie main promotional posters with one track from the movie score in the background. I feel like they could have come up with something more imaginative, like balloons floating in the dark or paper boats on a stream. I know that‘s not truly important, but it would have made a good addition for sure.The blu-ray provides a cristal-clear image quality and a very good audio track that will give you goose-bumps if you listen to it with your headphones on. I really appreciated the fact that the image quality remains unaltered even in the darkest scenes: That‘s quite important in a movie like IT, where scenes in the dark cover a good part of the movie runtime.THE MOVIEThe movie itself is quite a good take on the most appreciated Stephen King‘s novel. Some might argue that there is something missing from the book (like the famous ritual of Chud), yet I think you‘ll hardly find someone claiming that IT is not faithful to King‘s original work. Quoting one of the best reviews on the film I‘ve read, ‘‘Maybe IT is not the BEST Stephen King movie, but it’s probably the MOST Stephen King movie‘‘. Personally, I completely agree with that statement as, in fact, in Andy Muschietti‘s IT you will probably find what you loved most about the novel.Talking about movie direction, Andy Muschietti successfully manages to deliver a strongly personal view on the story, with tones and monsters really close to his previous (great) horror movie, Mama: If you loved Mama, there‘s a good chance you will probably love IT, too.What really struck me, though, was Bill Skarsgård in the role of Pennywise, the dancing clown. He‘s indeed one of the main reasons to remember this very good film, just like the great Tim Curry was for the 90s IT.
