If so how long is the throw of light and from how far can it be seen please?** A: Beam is certainly visible in daylight, I have no idea how far. There are various reviews of the flare on youtube which may answer your question. I am a sea kayaker and keep my flare in my buoyancy aid. However in another pocket is my vhf radio. I am sure a parachute flare is visible from much further away but only shines for a short period while the laser flare shines for (?) 9 hours. Also explosive flares go out of date quickly while you just change the Odeo's batteries. I confess I will feel a lot happier when I hear of someone being rescued as a result of using a laser flare!!! I would not trust it on it's own without either PLB or VHF as a primary way of summoning help. This LED marine flare by Odeo is an alternative to traditional flares. The flare is visible up to at least 3 nautical miles away and will display at a consistent brightness for up to 6 hours. This is a great alternative to traditional flares which will only burn for around 30 seconds. If using as part of a marine grab bag it's good to know that Odeo MK3 is waterproof up to 50 metres for 30 minutes. It has also been tested in a pressure tank at 100 metres for one hour proving it is ideal for divers. **Q: Is this suitable for scuba diving and if so, to what depth? Thank you** A: This is from the manufacturers website:- Is the unit waterproof? It certainly is, we have tested it officially to IP68 which means it is totally protected against the ingress of solid objects and has been submerged in water up to 50 metres for 30 minutes. In addition to this we have tested the Odeo Flare in our pressure test chamber at 100 meters for one hour, which makes it ideal for use when diving. **Q: The product information says that no batteries are supplied, but also that the supplied batteries have a 14 year shelf-life. Which is correct?** A: Mine came without any batteries. Each spring I put a new set of Duracell batteries into the flare, and use the old batteries in a torch or other non-safety-critical location. I then know the flare is ready to go if needed.
