Very safe to use, iI never felt in danger, the spring C clamps have plastic shield if needed. I removed them because there was interference on my shock shaft cover. There is a keeper tab on each C clamp that provides a "catch" so the compressed spring cannot get over that lip. The spring compressor worked smoothly. I took the pre-emptive precaution of spraying the compressor threaded rod with lithium lubricant, as well as spraying into the shaft ends so everything worked as smoothly as possible. I did NOT use a impact wrench! I used a 1/2 inch drive with a socket. By hand it does not take much time to compress a spring an inch so the shock can be disassembled. I still have to do the front end of my SUV, the rears are complete and would not have been possible for me to do without a spring compressor.
