There is also an indicator light that shows that the box is on, which is the color red. As for the age range, this can be used for a 7 yr. old kid to a senior citizen that is a musician. It is because of the semi-sharp stylus that I would not recommend for kids under 7 to use for safety wise. I am a musician and I bought this to see if it can be used for music and it definitely can! It is affordable and the sounds are beautiful!
