    outstandingly good

Cgi brilliantly good, the story is ingenious. Instead of analien invasion film ,you have a teen recruits ,trainingTo defeat a possible new invasion and lead the fight to themEnder the child /teen genius is trained to lead his classmatesThrough a series of simulation battles, not realizing that their graduationSimulation is a successful one ,and an attack on the enemy destroys theEnemy planet, the trainees find they have been duped by their leadersAnd the simulation was for real and the trainees won the war, while theMilitary leaders celebrate the trainees are horrified that they caused the genocideOf an entire species .that may have not been a threat. The moral of this story thatThe war was wrong, and the effects on those who did the fighting is traumaticEspecially when they realized the consequences of their actions, enders saved theLast of the species and departs for pastures new and after being promoted to admiral. The idea of a cadet leading others into battle is not original in fiction these days,jj Abraham'sDid it with Kirk,in the 2009 star trek reboot it ,didn't work then,And it's not plausible now. That's the only daft part. The ideaThat adults military conned or duped the teens is a sinister oneAnd cleverly done, but they were desperate and you could seeThey bitterly regretted their decisions and the end results .notonly they masterminded the destruction of a species but theyTraumatized the recruits. The inclusion of a Maori(Ben Kingsley) is good alsoBecause they are never represented on the big screen.Underrated in the states which is a shame Because it isVery good,I expect they didn't like the genocide bit.......

    Intelligent SF at its best

As a fan of the book series I was worried that the film adaptation would not work. The film works for me on every level apart from some scenes feeling a bit rushed. It was a pity that Gavin Hood's deleted scenes on the BD version had not been edited into a Director's cut version to show them in context. Asa Butterfield is very believable as Ender Wiggin with Harrison Ford as Graff, in a relationship that is reminiscent of Ford with River Phoenix in Mosquito Coast. The ensemble cast could have been developed more, especially in the character of Bean,( Aramis Knight), who is a key player in the other books of the series. A thought provoking SF experience on film for my young grandson when he watched it, asking more questions than answers.Production:The set designs & VFX by Ben Proctor, Sean Haworth and Digital Domain are magnificent, some of the best I have seen in SF films and IMHO equal to those in Gravity when projected on a large screen. Steve Jablonsky's score contributes at the emotional level without being overbearing. On my audio system the 5.1 HD sound track on the UK (Region B) version appears to lack the LFE and sounds different to the 7.1 USA (Region A) version.I hoped originally to see an IMAX theater version in the UK, ( which never materialised). A pity as the space scenes are awe inspiring when shown on a big screen with multi-channel audio setup correctly.

    War games

A movie adaptation of an award winning science fiction novel from the 1980's Ender's Game (Ender Saga) Ender's game is a near future story in which the human race is still recovering from a war with an insectoid race. Who came very close to destroying humanity but who were just beaten off, thanks not least to the actions of one brave individual.Knowing that the aliens could well be back one day, humanity is preparing to fight them again when the time comes to pass. The best and brightest from all over the globe are given a chance at military service. Starting from a very early age. Just in case the next war winning hero is amongst these recruits.Ender Wiggum [Asa Butterfield] is one of those smart kids who really doesn't fit in. But Colonel Graff [Harrison Ford] thinks he might just be what humanity is looking for. Recruited into the international fleet, Ender has a tough education ahead of him. And a lot to learn. Not least, what people will do to survive and prosper...Described as 'Harry Potter meets Star Wars' simply because a lot of takes place in a military school with various different houses who compete against each other in a sports game, this does have a couple of fight scenes that don't pull their punches in depicting brutality, and isn't really for anyone under twelve. As a piece of science fiction, it's not bad. It creates a credible near future environment and society. It tells a solid character drama, with a few plot twists along the way. And it does what all good science fiction should do. Make the viewer think about the many moral issues that the story raises. As a movie, it's not bad. Asa Butterfield delivers a very assured performance, carrying the entire film very well. Harrison Ford makes a decent gruff military man, and the rest of the cast are pretty good. As are the visuals, with plenty of zero gravity sports and cgi starship battles. How it rates as an adaptation of the book is a matter of opinion. It's one of those adaptations that sticks to the central narrative and gets that in, and as much else as it possibly can. Certain sub plots are lost or truncated. Perhaps it's best described as being pretty faithful but somewhat watered down. The film ends with set up for possible sequels. Which probably won't happen since it underperformed at the box office. But all in all it's a fairly decent bit of science fiction film, and worth 4/5.The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English.Subtitles: English. The dvd begins with several trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.Extras are:A commentary from the writer/director.A commentary from two of the producers.Several deleted/extended scenes. Which can be watched individually or all in a row. If you do the latter they run for just under eleven minutes. They can be watched with or without a commentary from the writer/director which explains them and why they were cut.
