When you take apart to clean. Use caution and the metal plunger has 2 rings. 1 is plastic and 1 is metal. It can be easy to lose if you are not paying attention, so don't do this at your sink! There is a spring that goes around a rod in the piece that faces towards you. That comes conpletly out for cleaning and that's where you will need the pipe cleaners!
