## Description

If you are in need of a traditional baseplate compass with high-end features, the Explorer Pro should be your choice. The compass comes with a slope card and a distance lanyard. The slope card is great both for detecting avalanche risk and for determining how challenging your journey will be. By knowing the slope you can also judge any extra distance that you need to go due to the slope. The distance lanyard has four scales on it; 1:24k, 1:25k, 1:50k and 1:62.5, which facilitates to measure the distance of your hike. Since its soft and bendable it’s easy to place it directly on to your route on the map Explorer Pro features DryFlex grip for easy handling, a clinometer for measuring slope angle and comes with a built-in adjuster for magnetic declination. It also features map-measuring in mm, inches, scales of 1:25k, 1:40k 1:50k, 1:24k USGS scale and GPS scales. The baseplate has a curved-up at the back-end for perfect fit in the hand, magnifying lens and rubber friction feet for precision map work. The distinct arrow and scales/markings in a clear contemporary font combined with lots of transparency in the baseplate makes navigating easier - when activated in light the luminous markings enable night time navigation. The red/black north-south lines in the capsule bottom ensures easy and safe settling. The needle is made from finest Swedish steel with high quality magnetic features.

Review: Really Nice except... - I like the user interface of this compass and other Silva compasses. Such as the Silva Expedition G 360, Silva Lensatic 360 Engineer and Silva Ranger 2.0. All have the same problem. Weak luminous on the North Needle. What good are all the other luminous markings (which are nice and bright) if the North-needle is so damn dim you can't see it after 2 minutes? Silva must have bought a gazillion of these needles balanced with thin luminous and are working through inventory. All in all, Great in daytime... not so much for night use without constant lighting with flashlight or glow-stick. Adjustable declination, yes. Subtle Clinometer, yes. I also like having the map orienting lines in the capsule unhindered by a company logo as the competition has done. If having bright working luminous is your top choice/priority, go with the competition (suunto). If you want daytime use with clean usable markings, go Silva!

**Q: Is the 1:24 map scale units in kilometers or miles?**
A: 1:24 is a ratio scale and can be in any unit.  It can mean that 1 meter on the map is equal to 24 km on the earth. Likewise the same principal would apply using inches and other unit of measurements .  You still would need to convert from meters or inches to miles or km, To figure out how many miles or km  you are navigating.

This is the North American version of Silva (not built in Sweden), however the construction is sturdy and durable. The needle is dampened well, does not 'dance' in the housing and settles fast. The slope angle indicator built into the compass is nice, as is the declination adjustment capability. Certainly worth the asking price...
