So This is Where the Lighthouse Was Going

*by T***. on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2010*

Wow....I am genuinely suprised that Interpol could actually put out a very mediocre album. They are just drowning in their sorrows, and everything good about Interpol is gone. Where's the catchy good-hearted songs like "No I in Threesome" and "Evil?" Where are the well structured guitar licks that give me chills like from "Pace is the Trick?" As far as I'm concerned, there's nearly nothing here to offer. I give it three stars because some songs are ok. But be careful buying this song, because there's nothing great about it.I gave it one listen and only got stuck on "Barricade." The rest of the cd felt slow and depressing. Then a few other songs stuck like "Always Malaise," "The Undoing," and "All of the Ways." After listening for nearly a full month, those are the only songs I truly like, not love. The rest of the album just has no creative pop to it. I can't believe "Lights" was a single. I see that song as the weakest of the album. "Lights" builds up to no delivery, which seems the pattern for the rest of the album.Don't expect anything like their previous albums on this one. They say they backtracked to Turn on the Bright Lights for this, but that album was fun, while this album is just dull and weepy. "Barricade" is the only faster paced Interpol effort, while everything else sounds anti-Interpol. You may think that this album would sound like one big slow song, ala "NYC" or "The Lighthouse" but those two songs in solitude are more well rounded than anything on this album. Again I only give it three stars because all of these songs are nothing past "ok." It's just a shame that there's nothing good to say about their inappropriately titled solo album.

Interpol and Bad Lieutenant Replay after Three Months

*by M***K on Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2010*

Here's the thing. No Carlos D. My earlier review complained about the psycho/sexual/relationship lyrics, which didn't bother me a decade ago, but I've reached a state in life where I wish artists would figure out something else to sing about. However, I was way too hard on this album. It's great, Interpol, music; in some ways more subtle and better than earlier works: say in recording, mixing, and guitar subtleties, and major effort by the singer to "deliver." So if you liked them before, and are still into or at least don't mind the excellent, but so predictable content of the 30 something lyrics, this is a tremendous independent rock album, like their earlier ones. I do feel they need a vacation, maybe a new direction, and I feel Carlos absence. Still, this is very, very good.Fo me, it's like Bad Lieutenant without Hooky, or Morris. Truth is, Barney is a pop genius, and Phil a guitar gun slinger, and there's way more Barney guitar that I thought. They don't "need" Hooky to make a great album. This drummer isn't Stephen Morris, but he's very good, and Morris makes a "guest" appearance. It just isn't quite the same album as if it were a New Order album, perhaps its saving grace, if there were internal problems. So while maybe I'd rather have a new "great" New Order album, Bad Lieutenant is an excellent pop/rock recording, and I didn't need a weak New Order album, instead. So I wanted to modify my earlier harsher reviews, having had the time to really listen more. Bad Lieutenant is very strong if you ever liked the best Electronic, or New Order.

    Interesting and Progressive

*by A***D on Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2010*

Like previous Interpol albums, the first few listens can never truly do their work justice. I found myself to be more disapointed with their new self-titled album on the initial listen compared to my dissatisfation with their third effort "Our Love to Admire." However, "Interpol" has some hypnotic and addicting qualities that aren't present on their previous album. These qualities kept me interested and before I knew it the CD wasn't leaving my stereo."Success" opens the album with the smooth intensity that Interpol seem to have mastered, then quickly shifts to the beautifully somber "Memory Serves." Subtlety is the best word I can use to describe Interpol's musicianship. The outro of "Summer Well" and the slow build up of "Lights" are the epitome of that characteristic. "Try it On" and "All of the Ways" are dark and gloomy, but effective nonetheless; while the final track "The Undoing" is surreal and almost dreamlike. Banks is still an effective singer with an ever improving and unique voice. Kessler and Banks are still weaving their guitars beautifully, and the combination of Fogarino and Dengler is still as thrilling as ever. Overall, I think it's an album that will come to be appreciated more and more as the years pass.
