Chapter 4, the most technical of the chapters (because it shows you advanced test design techniques) is explained easily, yet effectively, as well. Even though I knew quite a bit about software testing before reading this book, I learned quite a bit from it. As a result, I passed my ISTQB foundation level exam. And I believe that someone with no experience could also pass the exam by learning (and being able to apply what they learned to real life situations) from this book. Review: Good foundational material - This is a good text to get a basic understanding and foundation for software testing. It is quite applicable to organizations that have an established waterfall development methodology, or one that requires heavier documentation or process. We are putting all of our quality assurance engineers and developers through a customized course, based on this text, then having them take the ISTQB certification exam. This is the book for you. I don't say this because the book helped me--it didn't. I purchased copies of this book for anyone on my testing team who wanted to get the certification. So far, two have taken the exam and both passed with scores above 80% (65% is passing). Four more are lined up to take the exam first quarter of next year. So far, so good. Two other comments. First, if you see "Rex Black" on a book, you know it's going to be good. If you are a software tester and never heard of Rex Black, shame on you. This man is a god among testers. I learned more from his books than anywhere else. You should read his stuff. Second, when studying for the test and taking the exam, throw out EVERYTHING you know about testing. DO NOT try to reconcile what is in the book to what you do on the job. It will drive you insane and you will not do well on the test.
