It was really in line to be a fantastic psychological thriller in that it was deeply rooted in imagery cause and effect. Was this really happening or was it all in her mind? The play on words that could be taken two or three ways really had me excited. Until, it turned into the average young adult book. With all of the things still up in the air I assume it will be the first in a series. There were no conclusions and I suppose if a second book came out and was available for free with KU I would read it.Then again the situation with her parents is sooo twisted I don't know if I want to give this author another chance. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Cost of Silence *by E***N on Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2019* I struggled mightily through the first few Chapters of this Book. To the point where I put it down for several months at a time before loosely picking it back up again. Why? Not because the Story or Style of Writing were hard to follow. It’s simply because the Protagonist was in such a dreary state, it was difficult to swallow (or accept?) her circumstances.Upon hearing the News of the Book’s Sequel on the horizon, I knew I had to push through the unknowns of the first three to four Chapters to see where the Main Character’s Story goes. Yet, again, this was hit and miss reading over a few weeks.Finally, a breakthrough occurred when I recently caught the flu and found myself confined to my bed, sometimes, for the majority of a day. It was the perfect time to slow my hectic pace of a daily routine and read.If I remember correctly, Chapter Five was the turning point for me. It was a semblance of Hope, which I very much needed in my personal Life. At that moment, I understood why it took me so long to get to this point in the Story. My own Life was hectic enough and, especially at that time, I couldn’t take the immense weight of another’s burdens, even a fictional one.Anyhow, once the Story began to turn, it was easy pickings from there. I was fully immersed in a tale of Mystery with flashes a Humor, Romance, ..and Horror. The more questions were answered, the more questions I began to ask. Since the Book is written solely from the point-of-view of the Protagonist, we often asked the same questions as the Story progressed.I enjoyed the fact that the Author broke up the myriad of serious moments with ..dare I say “rainbow” colored, glittery spots of Humor. There were also teaching moments, Life Lessons, clearly intertwined with the Narrative of the Story. Almost like mixing vegetables with a child’s favorite meal to ensure they eat the healthy stuff.Ahh ..the Villain. You cannot have a great Story with the audience rooting for the Hero with extra exuberance without having a Villain you absolutely abhor. Check. The Villain is so reprehensible that it wouldn’t have bothered me if this Character died at the beginning of the Book. Who needs him, right? Meaning, the Author succeeded at creating the best kind of Villain. I know. It’s sad, but true.On a lighter Note, please turn away to avoid Spoilers. This is your only Warning. Okay. There seems to be the hint of a love triangle brewing. Clearly, there’s a spark between the Main Character and her new Evaluator. However, their Facebook Relationship Status changes to: “It’s Complicated.”I thought I knew what was going to happen. Then, I almost gave up, but not quite, when suddenly a new Character was introduced who has eyes on the Main Character, as well. She notices this new person in return, but since he’s late to the Party, how much should she really trust him?With that said, it’s settled. We, the Readers, have to pick a side. Are you Team Ward or Team Kael? Unleash the t-shirts to let your Voice be heard! I have my Team Ward t-shirt because I’m not entirely sold on Kael, at this point. I need to know more about him before considering a change of apparel. Saavy?Overall, the Author is a gifted Storyteller. Even the Chapter where it was an Exposition onslaught, it wasn’t the mind-numbing experience you’d typically expect. Impressive. Suddenly, I realized even adults want to be told Stories at bedtime as I untangled myself from my blanket. The last few Chapters having warranted the uneasy twists and turns. That was intense. I cannot take all of this Stress! Yet, as I dosed off for the night, I could only smile, ‘Wow.
