    Not Your Average FPS

*by I***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2012*

I have been watching videos about Arma II for years. The game looked amazing, but sadly I didn't have a computer to run it. Recently, I bought a computer capable of playing it, and you know what I bought almost instantly.I feel the best way to review any game is to dissect it, like a movie critic might, and look at how it performs in all of it's individual aspects then how they all work overall. So let's check it out.GameplayFirst off, Arma II is definitely not your average run and gun, Call of Duty style FPS. There's tactics, planning, and loads and loads of military jargon being thrown around. That doesn't really make for a game that revolves around story or set pieces (though Arma II: Operation Arrowhead had some good set piece moments)but in the gameplay aspect of the game, Arma II achieves it's goal with flying colors. Firefights are much more intense thean games like Call of Duty as it's pretty much 1-2 bullets and your down. for good. Yep, there's no respawning. You'll be happy to hear though that the game frequently autosaves on Singleplayer and it's not nearly as hard as I make it out to be. The reality is that if you act calm and level-headed and choose your tactics wisely, you'll succeed. Arma II is a game that portrays the idea of "Tactics are far more important in firefights than weapon load-outs" contrary to what games like Call of Duty would have you believe. Still, if your a person who likes instant gratification and simplistic gameplay elements, then Arma II is not for you. But if you like to be a meticulous strategist and planner or are just getting tired of small, linear, non-realistic FPS', then you are indeed Arma II's niche audience.StoryWhile I never rank a game down for having a bad or non-existent story, it is certainly a factor in winning some extra stars. With that said, Arma II's story isn't very enthralling and really only serves to try and hamstring the games battle sequences together. The basic story is that one that all FPS' lug around with them. You know, the one about Russia and the U.S.A duking it out in war. Actually, I'm not sure the USA really ever fights the Russians in Arma II, they just fight against insurgents and the likes in various Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries. Russia invades an independent Eastern European country named Chernarus (much like it did to Georgia a few years back) and a big conflict starts brewing. That's the over-arching plot, but story and characters are practically non-existent here.GraphicsArma II's graphics are a mix. On one hand, the absolutely massive maps and many vehicles and objects are rendered beautifully with some truly grandiose HDR. However, the game is lacking in it's animation department, as it drags you out of the game when you see a guy doing an animation of running into the back of an APC and suddenly being inside of said APC. Arma III is going to fix this problem, as shown by it's videos, with a new, special animation renders where animations interact with objects in the environment dynamically.Another thing to be aware of is that Arma II's optimization is less than good, particularly in forest areas with lots of objects. Be mindful of your PC specs before buying this game.SoundThis is the only area where the game just falls flat. The sound design is pretty bad, with most guns making weak, unsatisfactory "pew-pew" sounds. As realistic as that may be, it doesn't really provide the player with any kind of impact. Also, the voice acting for the command menu is really bad. It's not really the actors fault, it's just the way it's set up. When commands are issued, the game automatically divides the command menu up so it works dynamically. Therefore, if I point at a tree 300 meters in front of me and order my men to move their, my character may say "All, move to the tree at 12'o-clock at 300 meters"Actually, he says "All, move to, THAT, tree, AT, 12'o-clock, 300 METERS" (the caps signifying where he obviously changes pitch)OverallArma II is a great game for tactical minded people who enjoy less runny-gunny gameplay. It's certainly a niche audience, don't get me wrong, but if you think you'll like it, try the demo first. If it is your thing then by all means buy it, you will not regret it. Most importantly, make sure you have multiplayer. The singleplayer is fun but the AI is a little, um, stupid, so it's best to play co-op online with several friends on your side.Overall, Arma II is a great game and succeeds in what it was attempting to do. Even though I personally rank it a 5/5, it's not for everyone, so I have to reduce it's total score to 4/5 since some people may be more upset over the sound and animation design then I am.

Sandbox in it's new and Literal Form

*by G***G on Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2010*

Armed Assault, the franchise with a pretty standard love/hate relationship factor. You'll love the free-form, gigantic sandbox that it has to offer, but you'll hate it at the same time for it's (unavoidable) bugs and complications.Combined Operations is simply a package-deal with the latest "Operation Arrowhead" (Takistan, Zargabad, Desert environments) standalone expansion, as well as the original ARMA II (Chernarus) in the same box. The value is great, as you're basically buying the keys to a massive mil-sim amusement park, free to do whatever you please with not too many constraints. There isn't a good method in describing what kind of game this is if you haven't played it before. If you're used to Call of Duty and similar shooters, then you're in for a surprise if you play this game. It's a lot like the original Operation Flashpoint, except on a much grander scale, with more flexibility. I could spend a couple hours writing up an essay on what this game is, or I could just give a quick rundown on what one should expect.PROS:- Flexibility in doing what you want. Create your own missions, scenarios, dynamic environments, etc.- Striking visuals with the proper hardware. (Proper, as in: Very nice rig, $2,000+) A lot of things going on at once, leads to amazing scenes.- Community and it's modding counterpart is amazing. First thing one should do after buying this game, is visit [...] or the [...] forums.- Extremely *massive* environments, with land-air-sea mobility. Jets, tanks, helicopters, armored humvees, the works.CONS:- Can be ridiculously complicated for first-time users, even for PC game veterans. Patience is a virtue.- Quite a system hog, especially when the action is at it's finest.- Large, open-world, sandbox environment = plenty of bugs that one has to come to accept with such an undertaking.Overall, this is a game for PC gamer veterans and enthusiasts. This is not something you just jump into all the while expecting a simulation to be handed to you on a silver platter. Time and patience has to be put in to be able to get a great experience. Is that really a problem, or is it more of a quality? When typical gamers spend a large chunk of their lives dying-and-respawning in Call of Duty, with no change in pace and with little rewards... I would say it's a quality with it's own rewards. This is the kind of game you purchase as an investment, one that you will keep coming back to when you feel like trying something different. Making a new scenario, having a tactical battle online with others, etc.
