It’s used to get smells out of clothes. If you never used fragrance before you bought an He washer then you don’t need to unless you want your clothes to smell like fabric softener or you want an odor removed. But no it is not necessary at all. **Q: Can i use this in place of fabric softener? I line dry clothes, will clothes be soft without a dryer?** A: Downy rinse & refresh is an odor remover and deep cleansing fabric rinse that is safe on all fabrics and gentle on skin. You add this in place of fabric softener. It clarifies your fabrics by removing residual build up caused by detergent and normal fabric softener. I love because it leaves a very clean light scent (and softness), and not overpowering as when closed are washed with detergent and normal fabric softener. Also it elimintes the gunk that sometimes builds up in the fabric softener cup. As for line drying your clothes, I can't really answer that as I live in an apartment building. However, I imagine that it would be fine based on my experience with this product. **Q: How much of this should i use? I do not have a fabric softener dispenser for measurement.** A: With our Downy Rinse & Refresh, each load may need a little more or a little less based on your laundry needs. Start by filling half of the dispenser (around 1/4 cup) for normal loads, and pour more for tougher odors.
