I know that with most things, spending the extra few $ is worth the hassle of dealing with cheap alternatives. I bought a set of carving knives from here on Amazon and they were ok to get me into it but really nothing like these knives. They came quite sharp and retain their edge a lot (and I mean a lot) better than the cheap set knives. The compound was a little dried out but still fine and actually better than the set one. It just needs some heat.
