Crabgrass and other annual weeds that you are trying to prevent often germinate after several days with soil temperatures (NOT air temperatures) being around 55 degrees. The microbes in the soil are what break down this pre-emergent and since microbes in the soil are fairly dormant in cold weather, that means you can put this down early, well before the soil reaches 55 degrees and the pre-emergent herbicide will still be active when the soil reaches the temperatures where annual weeds start to germinate. This does not kill the seeds, it stops root development as the seeds germinate so the weed/plant does not reach a stage where it will emerge from the soil and grow. Many lawn care professionals put down their pre-emergent herbicides when the soil temperatures are in the 35-45 degree range to prevent weeds. Oddly, I have yet to see anybody state an actual temperature for the soil as a guide to apply pre-emergence herbicides in he fall...?
