Review: Easy direct replacement for older Warn 8274 winches - These were a direct replacement for the four solenoids in my 1970’s Warm 8274, Easy to install because all wiring and jumpers are the same as original. I upgraded to 2 AWG wire from the solenoids to the motor. I had ordered the new style solenoids from Warn but they are a different shape and require a new backup plate and different copper jumper links. It’s a lot of work and money to retrofit to the new design. These value priced Chinese solenoids worked perfectly (no grounding problems and wired exactly like the original design). Time will tell if they will work in the long run but solenoids are not complicated electronics. My old ones lasted over forty years and only an electrical fire from engine ruined them. I think these will work fine and are so easy to install. Review: good soldnoid - I used this for 80's jeep winch control which blew up by a sort inside the the motor but i got the motor fixed and had to replace the solenoids. These are smaller than what i had but they work like a charm. Good apm rating, heavy duty and easy to work with. I'm wondering if I can replace them with a higher amperage solenoid?** A: Winches use series wound motors which draw SERIOUS amps under a load. These were designed with this in mind so a higher amp rating really won't help. In addition, these are solenoids which act as a high amp switch so the power to the motor isn't routed through the controller. Under these conditions you would run a greater risk of burning up the motor with a higher rated solenoid if the OEM spec part was designed to fail first before that could happen. What kills these is water and/or low voltage. In use, ozone is created which is highly corrosive to electrical contacts so the early ones were vented which allowed water to get inside like when pressure washing off the mud that you just winched out of. Low voltage can cause the contacts to bounce creating arcing which can weld them open or shut. My advice: if one fails, replace the set and stick with genuine WARN parts. I replace mine every 3 years in under an hour and at $50 a set, its CHEAP insurance. Chinese imitations are JUNK, stay clear! This is one component you don't want to fail when needed most... **Q: Are these continuous duty 12V DC and what is the current for make and break and inrush** A: Sorry, I cannot answer that question. As soon as it was placed under a heavy load, the solenoid got extremely hot (too hot to touch) and simply failed. Assume it burned up and shorted out internally due to the extreme heat build up internally. More interestingly, the temperature was only @ 60 degrees F out where is was being operated. Would have been a bit easier to understand if it would have been a 100+ degree day.
