As a lifelong drummer, I always paid more attention to the keyboards in modern music than I did to my own instrument of choice. As usual the organs are meh, but EPs, Pianos and synth stuff is off the charts. Multiple arps are fantastic. The Korg Krome does not have defects and problems, this is a flat out lie. You can check many consumer sights as well as tech site reviews to verify the statement is inaccurate. Further, when you have problematic defective products/issues, it must be listed in the report to investors and again, no such statement exists. Secondly comparing the Modx and Korg Pa4X to this is not a good comparison. The Pa4x is a top of the line arranger keyboard, the MoDX7 is a mid line synth. They are very different and serve different needs of players. Lastly, if you want to compare the Pa4x to its true competitor that would be the Yamaha Genos and Yamaha Tyros 5. To your question, the closest competitor is the Korg Krome. It has a newly released version that has plenty of you tube videos comparing the two. I suggest you watch those, figure out what your needs are and make your choice based upon the research you do. Roland doesn't have anything really close here in this category, some would say the Juno Gi others may say the FA series, both arguments have merit and detractors. Perhaps another consideration would be a previous generation keyboard. The Korg M3 as an example is a full workstation prior to the Kronos. I bring it up because you can a find one fully loaded with the expanded memory and radias expansion for the same price, maybe even cheaper than the Yamaha MoDx. You also want to consider the Yamaha Motif XS, the workstation prior to the Montage which is what the MOdx is based upon. The Motif XS will likely be priced higher though. Just some food for thought. **Q: What amplified speakers does someome recommend for the nodx8?** A: Home use, you can run mono Left line to any keyboard amp/combo(Roland KC550) or even guitar combo(Fender Twin) depending on setting and desired sound. For a smaller sound & footprint, a Roland cube combo will suffice. Anything smaller simply use the headphones output. For professional live application simply run 1/4” TS from Main out Left & Right to a radial stereo di(or two single direct boxes)that is sent to house monitors. **Q: How many sounds can you layer at a time?** A: You can layer 8 sounds, but that gets a bit muddy.... I've had success layering 3 guitar sounds to make it fuller, 2 organ sounds, trumpet with a sax for lead... 4 brass instruments for a quartet type sound... a deep drum and a bass guitar is nice.... using the XF you had to erase a riff to layer instruments... with the MODX you can make up a name and save it to the memory... guitars have been improved compared to the XF, also organs.... strings, drum kits, harmonicas, pianos, horns are pretty much the same as the XF, the big development of the MODX is the arpeggio's with layered instruments and sound effects... a lot of movie soundtracks such as Stranger Things are done with the MODX... it is awesome in this category of interesting sounds and arpeggios... limitless really... **Q: how much does it weigh?** A: It says in the specs 42 pounds, but I think it's a little less than that. Love it! Using the Yamaha FC5 pedal for sustain, and the SanDisk SDCZ33-032G-A46 USB flash drive to save new patches when I make changes to the presets. The Yamaha soft case fits really well and I like the shoulder straps. The hard case was too big for me. For dust the Gator Cases GKC-1540 Stretchy Keyboard Dust Cover I liked the best. Playing through the stereo aux input of an Ampeg BA-108 bass combo amp. Sounds really good with amplification that can support the lower frequencies. Portability was the reason to choose the 61 keyboard. Yamaha music soft has downloads for everything. Also tried Soundmondo.com online social sound sharing community that was cool. Lot of people putting MODX patches on there.
