## Description

Now fully-revised and updated, this second edition of ACT Made Simple includes new information and chapters on self-compassion, flexible perspective taking, working with trauma, and more. Why is it so hard to be happy? Why is life so difficult? Why do humans suffer so much? And what can we realistically do about it? No matter how rewarding your job, as a mental health professional, you may sometimes feel helpless in the face of these questions. You are also well aware of the challenges and frustrations that can present during therapy. If you're looking for ways to optimize your client sessions, consider joining the many thousands of therapists and life coaches worldwide who are learning acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). With a focus on mindfulness, client values and a commitment to change, ACT is proven-effective in treating depression, anxiety, stress, addictions, eating disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder (BPD) and myriad other psychological issues. It's also a revolutionary new way to view the human condition - packed full of exciting new tools, techniques and strategies for promoting profound behavioural change. A practical primer, ideal for ACT newcomers and experienced ACT professionals alike, ACT Made Simple offers clear explanations of the six ACT processes and a set of real-world tips and solutions for rapidly and effectively implementing them in your practice. This book gives you everything you need to start using ACT with your clients for impressive results. Inside, you'll find: scripts, exercises, metaphors and worksheets to use with your clients; a session-by-session guide to implementing ACT; transcripts from therapy sessions; guidance for creating your own therapeutic techniques and exercises; and practical tips to overcome "therapy roadblocks." This book aims to take the complex theory and practice of ACT and make it accessible and enjoyable for therapists and clients.

Review: I would very much recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in ... - I bought this book wanted to understand more about ACT and how it works. It definitely achieved that aim. The style is clear and well-presented; the explanation is straightforward but not simplistic, and the examples given all seem helpful and constructive. The book reviews and details all the major elements of ACT, usefully explaining the links and relations between them as parts of the "hexaflex" comprising the main processes. I would very much recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in starting to understand ACT and how it might usefully be applied within the therapeutic relationship, and although I wouldn't recommend starting to *practice* from it (there are other, better, materials for that I'm sure) at the very least all readers will be much better informed to judge if they want to take their interest further or not. The style and tone are suitable for most readers, though naturally a familiarity with some form of therapy or other will be advantageous because it's a book about doing ACT as opposed to a book about doing therapy in general. As a result it rather 'takes for granted' that readers will understand the overall context of the relationship between the parties involved in ACT. That said, of course, if you are interested in neither ACT nor therapy in general I would imagine this book isn't likely to appeal to you in the first place, so the fact that some of the relevant context is assumed isn't really a criticism.
Review: GREAT - Effective book giving guidance on how to change thoughts and behaviours to overcome a number of conditions such as depression and anxiety. Uses Acceptance and Commitment Theory, based on mindfulness. Also has a range of good exercises to try out. Easy to read and follow. I am pleased with my purchase and would buy again.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliant for laymen as well as therapists.
*by A***L on 2 August 2017*

This is brilliant. I think I have read at least 50% of books in this genre and there are many that are very good, but this one uses language that is clear, no beating about the bush. Coming from a lot of Buddhist books and practices the idea of a contextual self that has always been there grated a bit on me, but Russ Harris says enough words to carry it through as 'well it helps, it's workable' but the rest is so helpful that is a minor quibble. This is a book full of wisdom.
