Usually, people refer to them as "9s, 10s, 11s and sometimes 12s." That refers to the high E string (the smallest one) at 0.009mm thick, 0.10mm thick, 0.11mm etc... If you're a beginner, 9s will be the easiest to play, but you may be better off using 10s right from the start so you can build up some strength. But you don't want playing to be uncomfortable. To be honest, the best way to learn and to gain finger strength would be by playing acoustic guitar **Q: Would the heavy ones work good on a hollow body guitar?** A: Yah, they should. Are you upping or changing gauge? If so the heavier gauge might throw off your guitar set up. I use the 11's or 12's in standard on everything from my tele to my acoustic, so they should sound and work well. Just bought a couple more sets. Great product ### ā­ā­ā­ā­ā­ Good Strings *by F***D on July 24, 2013* I bought these for my Strat which I play fairly often. I am by no means a professional musician, but I do play daily. This means that I go through strings pretty fast. Mostly because they rust and begin to sound off. Usually I use Ernie Balls but the idea of NANOWEB coating attracted me to this slightly more premium option. Pros These are good strings. They sound very good and perform as well as I would expect. One effect of the coating is slightly more slippery strings which was a benefit to me as it allowed for easier movement up and down the frets. Also less friction means fewer sores after a particularly strenuous round of playing. Most importantly the coating does prevent rust although it isn't bulletproof. Cons As I mentioned the coating is good but not bulletproof. After a month I am seeing discoloration on the strings over the frets that I use most frequently. Nothing major, and it hasn't effected the sound at all as far as I can tell, but it is there. In the end, I would have to recommend the strings.
