They're made of a rice paper type material which can be written on easily with permanent marker. The only downfall is that you really have to know the water current situation where you are planning on releasing them - we had a hard time finding shoreline in Hawaii at night where the tide wasn't coming IN instead of going OUT, haha! They're wonderful little lanterns, and unfold nicely. **Q: How long does the candle usually burn for?** A: It's a standard tea light in my package. From past experience, they last for most of an evening. Beware, though, when my package arrived, I had to pay an extra $8 for shipping - even though I had already paid for shipping when I purchased the item. I was NOT happy or impressed. **Q: Could we put these in a state park lake? how long does it take for them to biodegrade?** A: I think that's something you'd have to check with the state park. However, when I tested it in my aunt's pool for new years' wishes, the next AM they were still ALL there - just the wax from the candle was gone...so NOT the biodegradable thing I was looking for. We think we might just then reuse them each year, which isn't horrible, but FYI for other users that may not be able to repurpose them.
