    Prolific, HARDY Shasta Daisies!

*by J***W on Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2010*

Hey, this is the one to choose if you can only have ONE flower this season! Shasta Daisies are hardy, drought tolerant, and heat tolerant, so in the SouthWest Desert we plant them in September for a beautiful, showy Winter flower that stays around brightly thru Spring and into Summer. Shasta Daisies RESEED well, so can be treated like a PERENNIAL in mild climates - a sudden frost will kill them, tho, as with ANY flower. But since they reseed, they will come back, and spread around the yard. We use peat pods (pellets) like

to start the seedlings because otherwise the voracious BIRDS in our area EAT all the sprouts. We also have a problem with CATS using the flower beds, so we intersperse BIG ROCKS among the seedlings when we put them out to discourage THAT! CHEAP SEEDS is the very BEST place to order seeds, too, they are professional, courteous, and have a VAST selection on their web page. We got the rare and awesome CALIFORNIA WHITE LINEN POPPY there and mixed it in our Poppy Bed with Red Corn Poppies and Cosmos Sensation. (Too bad this GORGEOUS display is in the Backyard!) All of the seeds were purchased thru Cheap Seeds and ALL were viable. The corn poppies, for instance, were planted in the peat pots "Greenhouse" and were a quarter inch high on the THIRD DAY! (Started in Sept in a NORTH facing window.) When the seedlings are 3 weeks old, we put them outside in a prepared bed. (Big birds carry off smaller seedlings!) These drought and heat tolerant (reseeding) choices are favorites!

    They don't grow

*by L***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2007*

I've got a pretty good green thumb. I've grown lima bean plants, I've grown a one time only tomato plant, I had a Rotodendrum for 5 years until it died after a much needed pruning. I've transplanted mint and Hastas and they've grown magnificently, and grew Dusty Miller. I've grown my Tulips from bulbs and one out of my two rose bushes actually produced. I've even bought a Lilac bush from Amazon whose seller lied when they said it was insect resistant. It's leaves are being eaten and it refuses to bloom though lots of other leaves are growing. I even grew wheat from seed in nothing more than regular soil in a cottage cheese container, so I'm hardly new at growing things. But these seeds? They refuse to grow. Some might say get plant food. But wild flowers don't use it, so I decided not to and my other plants don't grow in special plant food mix soil. You get a lot of seeds for nothing. I should've realized that it didn't have a 100% grow rate thus it's a crap shoot. If they decide to pop up next year among my transplated plants I'll be amazed. Three bucks wasted.

    So Far So Good

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2011*

I purchased a packet of these last fall and as a trial I put a few seeds in a small patch in my flower bed. They germinated quickly but were nipped off by an unusually early frost. I planted some more again a few weeks ago when it warmed up and have been more diligent about covering them with overturned pots if it's going to be cold overnight. They have sprouted vigorously directly in the ground, and I'm really hopeful that spring will be long and mild here and they'll get nicely established before our brutal summers set in.
