While not the cannon entry for Metal Gear, as it was not made by Hideo Kojima, this game still holds up to any collector of vintage games or Metal Gear. Story wise, you are Solid Snake, a rookie member of the elite unit FOXHOUND, your task is to infiltrate Outer Heaven, a fortress somewhere in the South African jungles, rescue fellow FOXHOUND member Gray Fox, and destroy the secret weapon, a super computer dubbed Metal Gear. Along the way you'll have the support of your commanding officer, Big Boss and members of an armed resistance, lead by Kyle Schneider. Gameplay wise, the game is a little stiff, but you will get use to the tankish controls. You will be constantly switching between items and weapons, trying your best to evade the enemy. The key concept of the game is stealth and using your wits to outsmart the game. The game is very fun but does have many flaws. The translation team didn't do the best job and the game suffers from glitches as well. There is also no save feature, common from games of this time, this can be a pain if it's your first run. The game expects you to use your head and you really have to at times. The game can also be very difficult at times as you start with meager amounts of health and no weapons. Resuing hostages is the easiest way to get more health and ammo for weapons. All in all, I feel as though the game had high ambitions and see able to hit many good notes as both a fan of retro games and Metal Gear. I read a few of the one star quotes one said hideo Kojima was not involved in making the game and you should check Wikipedia for the facts. Yeah ill get right on that considering I once changed Wikipedia to say the Thomas Jefferson rode velociraptors when he went to fight hitler.... any way back to my review. This game practically started it all, until Metal Gear Solid etched the stealth genre into stone. If you're interested in playing the first Metal Gear game to ever reach America, then pick this up! However, I will recommend that you consider buying Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence instead of this, as it comes with both Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 as Hideo Kojima intended them to be. They're the quintessential ports of the MSX2 classics. This version of Metal Gear is riddled with translation issues, and some clunky controls. Along with that, there are many miniature glitches and bugs not originally on the MSX2 version, so be warned.
