The permeate pump reduces waste water, i.e., makes the system more efficient. A booster pump is needed when the house water pressure is too low for the RO membrane to work. I recommend a permeate pump always.... **Q: Does this filter out fluoride?** A: It's quite simple answer. Molecule of water is bigger then fluoride's, and that why it can't be filtered out. There's no filter on earth that's capable of doing it. The only way to filter out fluoride is thru distilling the water. Because boiling temperature of fluoride is greater than the water's. Thereafter fluoride's molecules do not boil off during distillation. **Q: Is the pump always on, and can you hear it. Our living room is next to the kitchen and the background noise might be irritating.** A: The pump only runs when the water pressure in the tank drops to a preset level then shut off when the pressure is back up. I have mine off the bedroom in a cabinet and I have to touch the pump to make sure it is running. The pump make a slight noise when it start up for maybe a second or two. But after that you have to touch the pump to make sure it is running. **Q: Can I install this in my basement and run the faucet line directly yo the kitchen sink? The line would be about 20ft long** A: I installed my filter in the basement and ran the line about thirty feet to my kitchen sink. The pump provides adequate pressure. Relatively easy to install. I’m really glad I did. My well water really tastes awful! There was no way I could’ve installed it under the sink, it would’ve made it extremely difficult to change the filters. I bought some more plastic tubing and I ran it through the cabinets and next to my washing machine. I built a little caddy so I could pull it out and access everything easily when I need to and I didn’t lose that very valuable cabinet space . I was a little bit afraid of adding extra length to the hoses, but if it made any difference, it seems negligible. It works great for me. I’m a single person, but I do drink a LOT of water. I am especially glad that I got the electric booster pump! I can’t imagine this thing pumping clean water using the pressure from my water system! To me it seems like it would have to be using like hundreds of gallons (cumulatively) of water to pump 3 gallons of filtered water. The pump is VERY quiet. I was very happy about that. You can barely hear it at all. As far as I can tell it pumps nice clean water and I’m really glad that it re-mineralizes the water! We have extremely hard water here, I was getting plenty of calcium and magnesium, I did not like the idea of losing that source of minerals, but hopefully so far so good. Thank you I am very happy with my purchase.
