The show itself didn't have the sophistication of later series, but the stories were rather good, and it was fun to see guest stars from old Hollywood (Mickey Rooney, Walter Pidgeon), as well as up-and-comers like Martin Sheen and Harrison Ford. Yep, he was in an episode with future co-star, Billy Dee Williams. "Dan August" might not suit the tastes of those who didn't see it in 1970-71, but it was a good cop show that should have had a longer run. However, one thing I do remember seeing on TV as a kid is a chilling kitchen murder scene that left an indelible impression on my young mind for decades to come. With the release of “Dan August: The Complete Collection” DVD set I’ve now discovered that that scene is from the made-for-TV-movie “House on Greenapple Road,” a movie that introduced the character of Dan August (played by Christopher George) to TV viewers more than six months before the first episode of the “Dan August” series, starring Burt Reynolds, would air. Other than “+ TV Movie” on its cover, there’s no indication on the packaging that “HoGR” is included in the set, nor as of this writing, is it mentioned in the above product description. For me, this movie’s inclusion is a selling point, as I imagine it may be for others. From my little bit of online research, “HoGR” was considered cutting-edge television for its time, and while its production is representative of the era, the movie still holds up for me as a classic 70’s crime drama.
