That is an ironic statement to me because this book should be for everyone. The insights, anecdotes, and especially exercises at the end of each chapter are incredibly thought provoking and perfectly in alignment with the author's general thesis that there is no one way to lead. Based on my decades of experience working in technical fields, I'm pretty sure this thesis will be lost on the people who would benefit the most from it. So if you are one of those people who for some reason either want to become a technical leader or who have found themselves suddenly thrust into a leadership position and want to find a book with detailed "industry best practices" on how to be a leader ... don't bother with this book. A quick Google search will more than likely lead you to several dozen books on "practices of highly effective leaders" or "seven steps to leading people effectively."For the rest of us, the author has laid out a good starting point to being the long process of learning how to be a leader in a technical field. The book is nothing more than a summary of 40 years of experience and learning boiled into a series of anecdotes, parables, and examples meant to highlight different methods of learning and leading. The reader is then challenged to do some exercises after each chapter.DO NOT SKIP THE EXERCISES!!!!I made the mistake of ignoring these small challenges and working items on my first read-through. I now know I missed a large part of this work's value by doing so. This is not the usual technical work where the exercises at the end are optional or feel tacked on because that's the format some publishing companies expect. These are working items culled from multiple seminars, classes, and workshops on leadership and consulting. You've just spent $10 on a long-term workshop and really ought to treat it as such.So to sum up ... move on if you're looking for a quick fix formula to become a lead or manger. Weinberg forces you to participate in the exploration of how a technical leader is created, and he provides *real steps* on how to get there. He also provides many short exercises for you to test your progress in your day-to-day activities.While reading this book, I had several major realizations about work relationships, why people react they way that they do, and how to motivate them. The title of the book uses the term "Organic" to describe this process, and it is a very valid claim because many of the leadership qualities are not masks that you put on or tricks that you acquire. Instead, they are internal realizations and shedding of misconceptions and assumptions that currently prevent you from being an effective leader. Cathartic in a self-help kind-of a way.This is highly recommended reading for technical folks in leadership positions, or those who are looking to become technical leaders. Weinberg includes many stories and examples which carify each chapter.
