One Cute Pattern, Needs a Little Tweaking, Other Concerns

*by A***Y on Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017*

So I got this a few weeks ago thinking, hey. If I can get a little sketching in at some therapy sessions, maybe I can get some granny squares in too! Ha, ha, ha. A month later, I finally finished the only one in this book worth doing because I was making a lot of scheduling lemonade. And that was after I convinced my crochet hooks, who hadn't seen me in quite some time, that it really wasn't an imposter trying to make off with them. So, as others have mentioned, this is not a book that's going to teach you how to do any of the stitches. If you are looking for one of those, these are two books I own that you can get used copies of that are excellent resources for crochet: Sasha Kagan "Crochet Inspiration" and Jane Crowfoot "Ultimate Crochet Bible". I am sure there are more recent offerings of a similar nature still in print, but since I don't have much hobby time anymore, and crochet books are no longer one of the widgets I collect, I can not speak to more recent offerings. But both of these are excellent and will teach you a wide variety of skills and techniques that are indispensable if you plan on taking this up as a hobby. And I think since this E-book is titled "How to Crochet..." it is a very valid criticism that there are not any explanations for the stitches. Now when it comes to the patterns in this book, there are really only two of note: the owl, shown on the cover, and the peace sign square (which is absolutely of no interest to me personally). The owl is the reason I downloaded this, I knew my sweet, animal loving daughter would think it was the best thing ever. And when I finished the square, finally, tonight she was even squealing about how cute it was. True. Everything else pattern wise is quite elementary and easily found other places. A couple of them, like the single crochet square, I was having a hard time feeling generous about them being included. The owl square, the only real problem I could see with it was that the explanations for putting in the single crochet chain three circle on the back of the owl for adding in the actual granny square part could have been better. For example, it says to start at a DC (double crochet) to the right of the owl's ear. But unless you hit exactly the right pair, your square will be off and wonky. The picture needs an arrow. And she says double crochet singular, and it's really the double crochet pairs that you are counting and working around for that step. For me, personally, I can overlook tinkering with the pattern if it's free, and by the time I downloaded this, it was. But if I had to pay for it, I'd be kind of upset about the lack of instructions (if I needed them), the lack of variety, and the lack of precision at that point of the main attraction pattern of this book.As it was, since it was free, I don't have anything personally to be upset about. These are just some things for you to be aware of as you are considering this particular e-book.

Nothing Quick and Easy About This

*by T***A on Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2014*

I was excited to get this how to guide because I wanted to crochet some cool new pieces. I was sadly in a state of utter confusion and helplessness!I think this guide needed a little tutorial on what all the abbreviations stood for and pictures of the actual "stitches" at the beginning of the book. A couple of the patterns later on in the book did explain what a few of the abbreviations meant, but it wasn't helpful by that point. In most of the pattern guides, the nonstop string of abbreviations was also confusing. Even if I understood all the codes, I would have still had difficulty following the steps because of the run-on sentence type of format. I think this could've been designed in a more user friendly type of format.I have crocheted several blankets and scarves and have been successful at following some tutorials, so I am not a total novice at this hobby. I know how much work and love go into these patterns, but this guide just wasn't helpful for me. I still hope to crochet an owl one day, though!

This is not for beginners. Has pictures of patterns and several items in construction.

Sixteen easy patterns for afghans in a variety of Granny Square patterns. This is patterns only, so if you don't know how to crochet, there's a link to All Free Crochet, which includes tutorials and more patterns. This site usually has wonderful patterns for any and every thing. The patterns included in this book are basic and easy; the same as you find in other quickie pattern books. One pattern square did stand out, the Sweetest Baby Blanket Square by Tamara Kelly from Moogly.I found several of the quilts to be poorly designed, color selection-wise, but it's the patterns that are important. The instructions are written in the same format as in any crochet pattern. If that's too difficult for you to follow, list the instructions line by line for each round. These patterns can't get any simpler, they're basic. Start with the Rainbow Reduction Granny Square to get familiar with crochet abbreviations and making the squares. Once you've learned the abbreviations and how to crochet, there's isn't any pattern you can't handle, including clothing. Visit the website link for an abundance of help and patterns.
