📖 Capture the Essence of Nature with Ansel Adams!
Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs presents the full spectrum of Adams' work in a single volume for the first time, offering the largest available compilation from his legendary photographic career. Beautifully produced and presented in an attractive landscape trim, Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs will appeal to a general gift-book audience as well as Adams' legions of dedicated fans and students. The photographs are arranged chronologically into five major periods, from his first photographs made in Yosemite and the High Sierra in 1916 to his work in the National Parks in the 1940s up to his last important photographs from the 1960s. An introduction and brief essays on selected images provide information about Adams' life, document the evolution of his technique, and give voice to his artistic vision. Few artists of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Adams' vision and lifetime of hard work that a book of this scale can be compiled. Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs is a must-have for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world. Review: Excellent coffee table and reference book for photographers. - Love this book! I studied every photo and read the synopsis of each in the rear. Photos are crisp and contrasty. A nice representation of the master's work. Review: A Very Well Received Gift - I purchased the used Ansel Adams Postcard Folio book as a gift for a special friend. When she received the book, she was very happy about the quality of the book. The pictures are so nice that she insisted that she could not bear to tear them out and send them, but wanted to keep the book as it was. The condition of the book was still great although it was used. And even though the book is used and only the size of a postcard she insists it is good enough to be a coffee table book for everyone who comes by to see. Because she was so happy with it, I have looked at other Ansel Adams Postcard Folio books to order because of the high quality and beauty of the pictures inside. Since they are so nice, I will be ordering some of the other Ansel Adams Postcard Folio books also. I was happy that the book arrived without issues and on time and in better shape than I'd imagined.

Good Value for a nice coffee table book
A good sampling of Ansel Adam's works, especially the nature shots. Also perfect size for a coffee table point of interest- always grabs the attention of visitors rather than just sit there and collect dust. It is a bit on the hefty size but that is to be expected considering the number of images it contains.

An excellent book for any photographer
Anyone interested in photography should certainly invest in this book. Adams revolutionized the art of photography, and it only makes sense to study his works.

Almost perfect, were it not because of...
the size. This book is about the size of 8x11, so it's not a large coffee table book size. What it lacks in area size, it makes it up in the number of great photos, all 400 of them. I also own the Yosemite and the Range of Light, one of Ansel Adams most highly acclaimed publication printed back in the 70's. I compared the two books. The 400 uses a whiter paper stock. Many of the photos in the 400 look different from the Range of Light. Some have more contrast, some have less. It is sort of like a slightly different interpretation. I closely compared a couple of the photos, in one case, I found the 400 has more shadow details in the deep shadow area, but the Range of Light counterpart has more emotional impact; the larger size may have to do with the emotional part. In another case, the 400 has less overall contrast, and a lot more shadow information comparing to the Range of Light, and I like the 400 interpretation better. This book is a must have for Ansel Adams follower.

Book Is Wonderful and Well Made. Packaging and Shipping???
The book is what I expected. The packaging (which I've already emailed Amazon about), well . . . Disclaimer: I'm leaving this here for a practical reason; not to be a jerk. If others see similar practices I want to encourage them to let Amazon know as well. The packaging was terrible. Extremely bad. I took photos before attempting to open because I was sure the books would be damaged and need to be sent back. Part of this *appears to be* Amazon's fault. At least part of it is, I think certainly, USPS' fault. The box was ripped open in one corner. The inner plastic was only partially covering one of the books, and was split open. If the box had gotten wet, the books would have been ruined, all of them. The usual practice of plastic wrapping the books to an inner piece of cardboard was not used. There were two (only two??? why?) biggish air cushioning bubbles inside, both of which were deflated 100%. It's as if they were sliced open with a razor before throwing the books in the box. So, the books were laying unsecured in a big box and they just sloshed around freely all the way from America to Japan. For USPS' part: unbelievable. And it's common practice now for some reason. They put this one box in a HUGE plastic bag and tie it shut! This means that everyone who handles the package cannot just pick up the box like normal, but they pick it up in what is virtually an oversized trash bag, which means they do not handle it gently. Indeed, the bag makes it hard to handle gently even if one wants to. Obviously, this proves to be the case, as the box was indeed ripped open in one corner. It would be surprising if the box was NOT damaged! In fact, when I cut open the plastic tie that held the bag closed, I realized how stupid the practice is and that the box and books were probably in bad shape. Imagine when I looked at the box and saw, in fact, I was right. In that bag, which is very thick and stiff not allowing it to sit neatly with other boxes, it is a virtual certainty that it will just be whipped around by its "neck", while the box and (in this case, unsecured) books are banging around on floors and against who knows what else. Amazon! You apparently boxed the books very, very poorly. USPS compounded the problem by shipping the box in such a way that makes it very, very likely any contents of the package will suffer from rough handling. Somehow, Amazon and USPS need to get their respective parts of the shipping process fixed. On another note: I marked the package as coming too late. It was within the estimated delivery time, so I'm not within my rights to really complain, but the delivery estimate seemed waay longer than it should have been, and counting from the time the package was sent to delivery, it was pretty long. And the biggest thing, I guess, is by some miracle, the books were not damaged. How, as mentioned, is only explicable by divine intervention.

This is the standard to which we all strive for
This book of the historic images Ansel Adams has created over his lifetime, is the must have book of his work. Just sitting and thumbing through the pages you are educated by what makes up a great photographic image. The quality of the book pages and printing is top-notch. Happy to have added this to my coffee table.

ottimo libro, classico di fotografia
Bel libro con foto molto dettagliate, peccato solo che abbino optato per spezzare le foto tra due pagine invece di fare le immagini grandi su foglio ripiegato, che sarebbe stato più gradevole da vedere.

A wonderful book with same amazing imagery
This is possibly one of the largest single-volume collections of Adam's photography. Amongst its photographs, the vast majority being the grand landscapes in which he excelled and which most would expect to be present, are a few surprises. There are a few scattered portraits or character studies which are very atypical. They could be classic Edward Weston, but the book is not about him! The book is brilliantly printed and the text is very much subservient to its wonderful imagery. Knowing just how demanding and controlling Adams was about the reproduction of his images, I would like to think that he would have approved of this book. It has a brief Introduction by Andrea Stillman who had once worked with Adams in the 70s before moving to MOMA, so she would have known him quite well. There is a useful bibliography to close, that may help find other Adams publication should you choose. There is a good appendix at the back which not only provides a reduced-scale version of the image but a segment of Adams notes and writings that relate to it. His note taking was extensive and allowed him to control what he did in the future to such a degree that he could exactly reproduce the exposure in the event that something had gone wrong previously or modify it so as to improve upon it in some way. Extracts from those notes have been separately published in addition to the other instructional and image-oriented books of and by Adams. Whatever the title etc, you cannot make a series error in purchasing any book of Adams' photography. This is no exception. For his landscape work alone, it is a masterwork worthy of study by today's photographers. For those, consider the relative few non-landscape images as a bonus. For the photographer in general, you are seeing a master at work. There has not been a landscape photographer better than Adams; Weston comes close but not quite matching, although his nature photography is supreme. For those reasons, this book is very highly recommended.

Ansel Adams – 400 Photographs: Schwelgen in Schwarzweiß
