Almost Perfect
As I approach my (ahem, ahem) mid 40's I am becoming more and more aware of the importance of maintaining brain health and brain functions. Personaloly, this is especially critical as multiple family members have Dementia on my Mother and Father's side of the family. As a result, I seize any activity which might help delay or even prevent its onset. That being said, I have downloaded countless 'Brain Game" apps , but I also wanted to increase the efficacy of these activities through the 'good old fashioned' act of grabbing a pencil and cracking open a book ( surely, activating underutilized brain functions in 2025!) This book does the trick. I especially like how the activities begin on a fairly easy level of difficulty and gradually increase as you move through the book. The activities are largely vocabulary/ word based with a couple visual puzzles. Currently, I am a little over halfway through the book and none of the puzzle has include overly complex instructions or been too tricky/not challenging enough - as I have found with similar books. I really only have two complaints thus far: the activities could be more diverse, its clear that there is a 5 puzzle rotation; - a bit more variety would be helpful. Also, while I enjoy word/vocabulary puzzles ( and excel at them ) I am sure it would be more effective and challenging if they included number/math puzzles as well. Overall, for the price, it's a good value and achieves its intended purpose - just as weight lifting is awkward and taxing when you first begin gets easier the more you do it , the same can be said for these exercises. At first your brain struggles to access the information required but after a little bit the retrieval process becomes easier which, in turn translates into less' brain farts' in everyday life and lets you know the book is effective.

Best of the Genre! Word puzzles and Activities. My Favorite!!!
This is the first of 3 books by Nancy Linde, and they are my absolute favorites of this genre (brain, mind activities). The book has many types of puzzles: ALMA'S SHOPPING LIST - anagrams ANAGRAMS CLASSIC RIDDLES COMPOUND WORD SEARCH - Put two pictures together to make a compound word. (Ex. picture of a crab + picture of grass = crabgrass) DOUBLE TROUBLE - Compound Words ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS EPONYMS FAMOUS MOVIE LINES FIND THE WORDS - Find all words beginning with a certain letter in a picture FINISH THE JINGLE, FINISH THE SAYING FOLLOW THE RULES HOMONYMS MONTH IN HISTORY - Identify important dates ODD MAN OUT ONE MINUTE MADNESS - How many items you can list for a subject in one minute PALINDROMES PICTURE THEMES PUT THE LIST IN ORDER RHYME TIME - two definitions that must rhyme RUN THE ALPHABET - Different categories where you come up with a word for every letter of the alphabet. STINKY PINKY - Two clues, answers rhyme. (Ex. An introverted insect. Answer: SHY FLY) TRIMBLE WACKY WORDIES WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON? - Ex. Bowling alleys, seamstresses, and hand grenades. Answer: Pins WHATZIT - Guess the thing from clues WHOOZY - Guess the person from clues WORD PARTS - Ex. The opposite of out + verdict deciders. Answer: In + jury = injury. WORD SEARCH This is just a small fraction of the activities. There's a large variety of activities which are all fun, interesting, and challenging. NOTE: These are all word activities, no number puzzles such as Sudoko, etc.

Better than Trivial Pursuit!
excellent set of brain engagers by Nancy Linde. The book is fun and not just for seniors... but with seniors there is also the answer section. Where? But of course in the back of the book if you get stumped. The only part that is not so great is having to check off or write the answer or selection in the book... especially if you want someone else to take a stab at some of them. There are ways around it as in using a pad...With over 400 pages it is voluminous but each area has an easy to read intro and instructions. Each section is full of fun and engaging puzzle, trivia & word games. E.G. in one minute how many of the ten commandments can you list? There are some sections that maybe stumpers and you may need to brush up on your "whatits" and "whoozies". If you can't name the seven deadly sins in 30 seconds (p.s. if you like wine there is one called seven Zins and they are on the bottle) or name the type of critter this is I.e. Pepe Le Pew then this book should be a fun book for you as it is sure to test your long term memory, working memory, processing speed and executive functioning. I have to get back to the Odd Man Out Section; Hoover, Reagan, Truman, Eisenhower while noting which one is the odd man out and why.

A mixed bag of fun challenges + ridiculously outdated trivia
We highly recommend half of this book. It's full of challenges that are accessible by almost anyone, and there's a lot of variety. For instance, you might be given two different word definitions & have to name a homonym set that fits. Or you might be tasked with listing 26 different color names, one for each letter of the alphabet. Or come up with a list of words that begin with the prefix "ant-" based on various clues. We find these types of puzzles both challenging & genuinely fun. And for most of them, they're the types of challenges that you can read aloud to a group--or to a significant other--to enjoyably while away a long road trip. But then there's the other half of the book. That's the half filled with some of the most useless trivia from long gone eras. You might be asked about a wealthy socialite from the 1920s, or a slightly famous murder trial that took place during the Great Depression. Occasionally there are questions from the 1990s or--even more rarely--from the 2000s. But these are few & far between. For the most part, you'll get a lot of questions that you're really only likely to know if you lived during the early-to-mid 20th century. In retrospect, the cover text is very revealing: the book claims these puzzles were designed to "keep your brain young." That makes sense if it was written with an an older audience in mind. Bottom line: if you were born in the 1940s and enjoy word puzzles & trivia, it's a no-brainer to buy this book--you'll probably enjoy every page. If you were born in the 1970s, you're going to struggle a lot but you'll still get a lot out of it. And if you were born in the 1990s or later: enjoy the word challenges, but prepare to skip many, many pages & roll your eyes a lot.

Lots of Variety
This is a large collection of puzzles with a great variety of puzzle types and varying skill levels. Most puzzles and answers seem fairly easy (which give you a sense of accomplishment), however there's always a few in each puzzle that are a little more difficult and make you think a little harder, which is the whole point. I would recommend this book.
