undefined* Description * This study explores the hidden world of banana cowboys, the white men who worked for the United Fruit Company (UFCO), lived in its corporate colonies in Central America and the Caribbean, and enacted the domination of tropical peoples for the company during the 1920s and 1930s, when UFCO was the largest agricultural enterprise in the world. The book points out that even though the banana cowboys had more power than the workers of color that they supervised, the banana cowboys were themselves often misused by the company. The book details their efforts to petition UFCO management for improved pay, working conditions, and living conditions, and demonstrates the company’s problems governing and controlling white Americans living abroad, who were not always loyal to company goals.
