What's the main difference between this machine and the less expensive Lattissima Plus?

The ability to heat just milk, for one. Ability to dispense hot water.   Larger milk, water and spent pod reservoirs.  LED display.  You are prompted to clean the milk receptacle.  A 'ristretto' setting (very small amount of espresso).  I have both and use both every morning when preparing lattes for my husband any myself.  No need to have two, but I'm keeping the Plus as a back-up.  The Pro drew me in with the milk and water settings.  I like just steamed milk occasionally (much better steamed than from the aeroccino), and my husband enjoys tea, so it is nice to have the hot water setting.  And to be honest, I just like a little coffee with my milk, so I am often adding more milk than the latte setting provides (yes, I do realize I can customize that output on both machines, but not everybody feels the same as I do about milk qty).  Very sturdy machine.  More sleek than the Plus.  And when I say milk, I mean coconut flavored Almond milk.  The primary reason I purchased a Nespresso machine in April 2013 was to have lattes with non-dairy and non-soy options.  At the time, last April, Starbucks and Peets did not offer almond milk.  Peets now does, but they don't have coconut flavored - it makes all the difference.

I am new at this and this might be a dumb question, but, does this machine also make regular coffee.

You can only use the Nespresso PODs to make coffee.  It will NOT make coffee from ground bean coffee.   The POD for LUNGO will produce a little more coffee than the espresso pods.  A LUNGO is like a double shot espresso, and a double LUNGO is still less coffee than a standard 8oz coffee.   This unit is meant for anyone that a. is okay with POD coffees b. wants a very small espresso shot or b. is happy with double espresso shot.  The frother for lattes is excellent.  We actually use our regular coffee maker and use the frother unit only for steamed milk to add to our regular coffee.   We make PODS when only one cup is all we want.

Is the espresso quality as good as Starbucks?

I don’t like Starbucks anymore after having a VL machine, I imagine the pods are just as good. My fiancé offered to grab me my usual and I said no, it doesn’t compare to the taste of the Nespresso. I never took coffee with me and always stopped, now I take it with me. But Starbucks does make originalline capsules, so always an option. These machines will save you money if you drink double shot lattes and macchiatos. My keurig even on strong is a disappointment now, so I top it with an espresso for flavor. Sad, never realized how bad my coffee was. I cut down on sugar and cream all in all as well even though the coffee is stronger, but coffee cream/syrup flavors if paired properly enhance the coffees taste without needing much or more than a dash of sugar.

Original line. My husband hasn't had a regular cup of coffee at home since he bought this FOR ME on Mother's Day. I'm starting to think this purchase had devious motives. (I love it, too.)
