I just purchased this transformer but most of my appliances from the us are two-pin and do not fit the 110v socket. do i need an extra adapter to fit

The north American two pin appliance cords will fit in the three pin 110 volt of the transformer , but they loose connection and for this reason i would purchase another brand , however i switched my two pin appliances to three pin north American plug and the transformer works okay

No ,it can't. while you set 110v output. you can just use 110v socket .

Out of the box, will not power up?

There's a surge suppression / overheat button on the back of the device - (a) ensure that you've pressed this in to reset the device (in case that's been tripped), (b)consider use of an alternate power cable, then finally (c) consider turning on the converter without a load plugged in to ensure it it's otherwise faulty.

I am trying to plug in a us power strip, and it is causing a power surge. i am following the instructions included with the device. what should i do?

When my unit was plugged in to a live 230V supply, with the switch on the front 'off', both power pins (line and neutral) of the 120V output sockets were sitting at 230V above earth. This was a highly dangerous situation. Under these circumstances, your safety would rely on your 120V equipment having at least 320V isolation from any part that could be touched.
