Big power in a little package
Hello there tool shopper, This drill and impact driver combo set replaces my aging Makita 6914D 12V impact driver. I bought that tool in 2003 and it has been nothing but reliable and until now was by far the most used tool I own. This year the batteries' working time is down to 10 or 15 minutes making the tool usable but annoying with the constant battery swapping. I shopped around and after looking through new Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi and Rigid I settled on this Bosch combo kit. I'm impressed by the compact size and substantial power of these tiny Bosch drivers. The impact driver advertises slightly higher RPMs and torque than my old Makita and is substantially smaller and lighter. By comparison the body and battery profile of the 6914D looks and feels like the new 18v drivers and is much bigger than this pair of 12v Bosch drivers. I always thought of my Makita unit as small and maneuverable; it's the only drill driver unit I ever used on a job or around the house. It was much much smaller than drills of its time and until now I never saw it as larger compared to other tools. Man, these two are shorter in height and length by sever inches. Any smaller and you couldn’t call it hand held because you couldn’t close your fingers around the handle! I thought about buying just an impact driver, however the price for the driver and batteries was so close to the price of the one tool kit it was worth it to me to have the drill around even if it won't get much use. I already have a removable chuck so not having one built into the drill is preferable for me. I can attach the chuck to either tool as needed and not bring a second tool along if it suits to just pack one for a job. There are times when the banging of the hammer and anvil in the impact driver was a bit much, mostly working in tight closed spaces like basements or outside where I could be bothering the neighbors. It will be nice to have a drill for times like that if the extra torque isn’t required. So, why not? The tools are remarkably small and feel very balanced in the hand. They both spin true and I like the rubber grip and bumpers on the sides of the tools. I can lay them any which way and not worry about beating up what I just laid them on. They will balance standing up on the battery pack like my old Makita but I would not suggest it on the job. I mention it b/c that is just how they feel when you hold them, nice and balanced. I lay mine on their side when working. You are probably wondering “Why not get the bigger 18v tools?” For me it is because only once in 12 years was I not able to drive what I trying to drive w 12v. I sistered a dozen 2x10's with glue and dozens of 4" #10 Spax and the Makita never missed a beat, even with the aging batteries. This includes using it to take the wheels off the car for brake jobs over the years. The only thing I couldn't drive with the old 12v was an 6" lag into an old treated 4x4. I seated it with a wrench and that was that. I should have prevailed the hole, but I didn't and it still worked out fine. The impact driver in this kit is advertised a little more torque than my old tool so unless manufacturer’s figured out how to fudge their specs last week I’m betting this one will do the same job as the last if not a little better. So far that’s been true for me, and from what I read in other reviews it’s been true for other builders too. For me 12v is plenty, so I spent the extra money on another tool (the reciprocating saw) instead of investing it in extra power for the odd times I might want it. If I’m driving big lags and I have trouble with the last inch I don’t mind getting out a wrench to finish them off. Call me cheap but those 18v batteries cost quite a bit more to replace. I like the no-memory Li-Ion batteries but I’ve had enough laptops to know they only have so many charge cycles and they last just about as long as the warranty. I’m betting on replacing them or buying an extra before I trade up tools so 12v feels like the way to go. Just about any tool from the big names will do the job you ask of it so I suggest you get the tool(s) you like using. You’re going to be looking at it a lot, if you don’t like looking at it you should at least be indifferent towards it. Why own a tool you don’t use, and why use a tool you don’t like? I like things that make my work easier and don’t cost a fortune, and I like these tools quite a lot. For me these are great to look at and have the combination of power and features that suit my needs. Happy tool hunting.

Amazing! (UPDATE after 1 year of everyday professional use)
I use these little puppies everyday as a full time mechanic to get into tight areas and break loose tight fasteners. I was a little apprehensive at first, but those thoughts were quickly quenched by satisfaction after the first week of flawless use. I can't say enough. I use them all the time. The batteries last forever and are strong for a tool this size. All my co-workers have paid more than double for their snap-on versions that have less torque, no lights, and no clutch adjustment. I don't know why these aren't more popular than they are. I highly recommend these to anyone from a full time technician to the handyman around the house. ****UPDATE***** I was very optimistic about using these drivers and my only real worry was their durability. I still use them daily as a professional mechanic. I have been using them in that manner for over a year now and they have never skipped a beat. The batteries usually last a full week between charges and only require a short charging period. I still prefer these over much more expensive mini-drivers. The control mechanisms are more conveniently located and more intuitive than on other drivers, and the torque is top of the line. Thank you Amazon and Bosch for offering such an outstanding set of drivers. I have only one beef with the impact, and that is that I wish it was available with a fixed 1/4" drive anvil versus the 1/4" drive hex bit. Maybe they will in the future if they knew how much client potential is available in the automotive world versus just home improvement. Having an adapter installed in order to use sockets makes the tool a little bit longer and harder to use in some places........that being said, the drivers are so compact, that situation is a very rare case. Still 100% recommend these to anyone interested in a solid set of drivers for casual or professional use. I have no doubt that these will not last a lifetime at the pace that I use them, but I will gladly buy another set when these are exhausted......but it looks like they will give several years of solid use before I need to start thinking about replacing them. I have honestly started thinking about purchasing a second set for home use because I find them so convenient at work.

Great pair of tools, should cover almost any needs
So these replaced a 12yr old Dewalt 12v drill that was at the end of it's second set of batteries. While the Dewalt never had any problems other that battery life, the driver in this kit is half the size, half the weight and twice the power. Key points of the two tools are: Common: 1) Super fast charge, the 30min listed time is real and more than enough to keep up with use. 2) Super comfortable in your hand. Great fit and balance. 3) Wish the lights stayed on for a bit after you released the trigger. Milwaukee does this and it's a great feature when working in dark places. You are constantly trying to hold the trigger on these on just enough to get the light but not start the drill, it is possible. 4) Wish there was a spot to store one bit on the tool. Driver: 1) Quick change chuck is a huge time saver. I had one of these chucked in my old drill most of the time. Integration on this tool makes the tool length less than half of a large drill. This tool fits in all the tight spaces your big drill will not. 2) Plenty of power. I drilled a dozen old dry joists with driver and a 3/4" self feeding auger bit, no problem with battery left at the end. 3) OK light only on the bottom. Impactor: 1) If you haven't used an impact driver to run wood screws this will change your life. All the slipping/cam out you get trying to run 3" wood screws with a driver. And the extra force you apply to try and stop it. All a thing of the past. You can drive screws with this in your off hand with the tool upside down. It does all the work and never cams out. 2) Does a surprising job on old rusted screw removal. Helped a friend remove some ancient tie down points from his truck bed. He had given up with a screw driver and a bit in a ratchet. This powered them out with little effort. 3) Will drive 3/8" lags into pre-drilled holes without problems. 4) Great light with 360 degree coverage. 5) This will strip threads and snap bolt heads off. With great power comes great responsibility.

Get the set, great for home and automotive
I am a mechanic by trade and a jack of all trades and master of none. I use this set primarily in my shop for auto repair. The impact driver (the one that isn't adjustable torque) is great for around the shop/on cars. Its got enough power to remove most bolts (up to a 12mm head). I use it for valve covers, radiators, drain pans. Its strong enough to break most small to med sized bolts lose. It tightens really well also. I've used it for drilling around the house and driving in screws for blinds in dry wall and it worked perfect. It didn't strip out the screw heads and it had enough force to drive everything in. The battery lasts a long time (usually use it about 10 times a day and don't have to charge it till about the 3rd day +/-. It handled the drill bits well, except as others have said, there is a little play in the bit. As for the adjustable torque driver, its a great addition and has its place. I primarily use it for doing dash work and trim pieces. Its not super strong when it comes to breaking bolts lose, but it works well on smaller pieces. It all boils down to the right tool for the job. The battery last just as long as the other impact in this set. Its perfect for doing faceplate covers around the house and delicate stuff were you don't need a ton of torque to tighten, you just don't want to do it by hand. Overall I am very happy with the set. Great price (Snap On wants $240 for just the impact driver with a lesser warranty) and the Bosch warranty sealed the deal. I would rec this for auto mechanics and around the house. I think it would be great for contractors due to its size and the amount of power it has.

WARNING on using PS41 Impact Driver
PS21 The basic drill-driver is a handy size and is designed well for tasks involved in installing and removing screws and other fastners. While there are drill bits that fit this kind of driver, it does not have a proper drill chuck and thus cannot be expected to hold them perfectly straight for pinpointing where you want to drill a hole; moreover, adding a chuck won't help for the same reason. The whole reason for not having a chuck is to speed the process of changing driver bits, and that's where it excels. The adjustable speed, ease of changing direction, and highly adjustable clutch are all perfect for my needs. The small, long-lasting and fast-charging battery is quite useful for me. The magnetic holder for driver bits of all types works well for my purposes. The compact size gets into all kinds of small places. I love it! Five stars on the PS21. PS41 I had originally planned to get just the PS21, but the combination with the PS40 was a good value, and although I was not sure I needed an impact driver, reading up on it, it sounded like a good idea, and a tool I would grow into. The advantage of an extra battery of the same size, using the same charger, seemed good. I really like the drill driver for quickly driving long screws into wood with less effort. I will be using this tool a lot for construction projects. BUT BEWARE! DON'T USE SHORT BITS WITHOUT A BIT HOLDER IN PS41 I do have one complaint, which is that the driver bit attachment is significantly different from the PS21, and is not well described in the instructions, and this caused me a big problem. The instructions say the following: "The Bosch model PS41 Cordless Impact Driver has a collet that accepts only standard 1/4" hexagonal shank accessories with power groove." Well, ALL of my driver bits are standard 1/4" hexagonal shank, but I didn't know what a power groove was (isn't that something in a Michael Jackson tune?), and they offered no explanation. I looked closely at the bit I wanted to use, and it had little grooves in it, so I used it. All went well until I tried to remove it: it was jammed tight. If you look at a two inch screwdriver bit, just above the hexagonal shank there is a substantial indentation that goes all around the bit. THAT is what they mean by the "power groove". What I tried to use was a one-inch bit, and those bits NEVER have a power groove. To use a one-inch bit, you MUST use a bit holder with a power groove - or you will have a devil of a time getting that one-inch bit out again. Do I feel stupid? Sure. But hey, I'm an amateur, not a pro: there's nobody around to explain this to me, and the instructions COULD have had an extra sentence like "WARNING: Do NOT use one-inch bits directly in this tool without a bit holder or it will become jammed and difficult to remove, potentially voiding your warranty." and a little picture of the one inch bit with a circle and a line through it. I notice some people complain about getting reconditioned tools - I bet these are returns from people who jammed the PS41 and just returned it that way. Now then: if you make this mistake and call customer service, like I did, they may tell you to try tweezers or long-nose pliers to pull on the bit while pulling down on the collet. No way. Try this: get some narrow-nose vice grips. Clamp down on the bit just as tight as you can, releasing, retightening the screw, try again until you can't clamp any more, back off and clamp. Now put the vice grips in a vice, or clamp them to your bench somehow. Then while pulling down the collet, pull the drill for all you're worth. After a few tries, it worked, and no damage to the tool (OR the bit). And now I own a magnetic bit holder plus a variety of bits that don't need it. And you will too, if you read this warning. By the way: this warning ONLY applies to the PS41. The PS21 works FINE with short bits. PS41 gets four stars because it needs better instructions or a more versatile collet. BOTTOM LINE These are great tools that suit my purposes well. I rate the PS21 five stars by itself. Because I wasted so much time getting the PS41 unjammed, and it would be so avoidable with better instructions or design, I rate four stars overall.

Set of two drill tools
Very quality product even if it’s not made in Germany. It’s made in Mexico, but who cares, the manufacturer plant is the same, as well the quality, it’s just assembled there. At least is not made in China :). Beautiful design, super nice in materials and feeling when you hold it, you can feel and tell the quality and the German, engineering right away! Super slim design, not heavy, and does the job for which I bought it in a first place! The batteries last forever for now, very cute and helpful LED, lights on both. Highly recommend it, especially for the price. It’s a little outdated technology given that it has a brush motor, not brushless, it honestly I don’t care, it does the same job, and you save tons of $.

Awesome little combo. Super handy size!
Awesome little combo. Super handy size... nice and compact lets you get into tight spaces and work on smaller things without feeling like you're using massive drill on some small project. Exquisite control over the speed with the trigger lets you go really really slow for those smaller, more delicate projects. Fits the space between a powered screwdriver / screwpen thing and a full size drill perfectly. This takes care of 90% of your drilling needs around the house. Major projects you'll want a real drill, but my nice big drill just doesn't come out to play as often anymore since I got this. Good size for travel, too, again without feeling like you're bringing some monster tools along (little things at the office, helping out the parents or sisters with small things around the house, etc.). My electrician swears by his and uses it on every job, and as soon as I saw them in service I couldn't wait to get one of my own! Battery life is decent for the smaller projects these are intended for (not massive construction projects), and recharge reasonably fast... plus with two tools, you can always steal the battery from the other one if you need just a little more juice. My only complaint that comes to mind is I wish the case was designed a little better, as the two tools and charger fit inside somewhat awkwardly (with no super-obvious "right way"). It fits, but could be better designed. I'd knock a quarter star off if I could, but a minor niggle like that doesn't justify dropping a full star.

Love it! Powerful in a small package
I chose this product because of the vast offerings Bosch has in their 12v line. I have another black and white "M" brand 18v set which I am completely happy with but I purchased this due to the portability. PS41 impact driver: Super powerful. I was shearing the heads off drywall screws the first day while just testing it out in a 2x4. It really is the bee's knees when you need the torque. I use it for driving screws, taking screws out, and it really rocks when working on your car. Get some 1/4" and 3/8" adapters and this thing will make your car repair work so much easier PS21 driver This little guy doesn't quite have the same torque as the impact, but it has more than enough. The best part about this piece is that it has a nice adjustable clutch which is a godsend working on delicate electronics and items where overtightening could result in you having a bad day. A bonus is that the 1/4" chuck will take a short bit without any type of adapter, making this easy to use in small cramped areas. I am not using this as a drill as I bought the PS31 drill for that. There just is too much play in a quick release 1/4" chuck to drill accurately. Notable Improvements that Bosch could implement: 1) The light goes off as soon as you let go of the trigger. This could be improved by having a 5-second timer which keeps the light on after release. Not a big deal 2) When you first grab the tool after it has been sitting and hit the trigger, there is a short delay. Not the end of the world, but is a little strange to get used to 3) You can't put stubby bits in the PS41 (as others have mentioned) without an adapter. If you do, it will get stuck so be aware of this 4) There should be a battery gauge on the PS21 as there is on the 41...but not a huge deal either way. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and I am using the 12v tools way more than the 18v just due to the small size and compactness. If I have a bigger job which requires the torque I will bust out my 18v otherwise I am super happy so far.
