I understood it as a general anti-war novel. Reading the book again, as a 78 year old, I have found the book painful at times to read. Scenes with lustful airmen and lustful Roman women are no longer funny, but profoundly sad - which I think Joesph Heller was trying to tell us. Battle descriptions did not move me as much as a young man who believed himself to be immortal, as they have now when I am certain that I am not immortal! It is still a good book, but much sadder now than it was so long ago Review: The book has much more detail than the movie. - Don't get me wrong about the movie. The 1970 movie was superlative. However the book goes into much more detail, including things which never would have been allowed into a movie. I'm most impressed by the basic premise of the book: War is an insane endeavor and so makes men insane. An insane person can be totally psychotic but at the same time be an accurate observer of their surroundings. (Paranoia is not a disorder of the content of thought but rather is disordered form of the thought itself.) But if they want to get out of the war because of their insanity, that is a sane desire so they cannot be withdrawn from battle for their insanity.

I had read this years ago and decided to revisit it.Didn't remember much about it,but after a reread must agree that it's repetitive and too long.If you can push tbrough to the end you will be surprised just how much insanity could be crammed in such a small space. As a soldier,I had met every character in this book and my cynicism mirrored that of Yossarian.

Man, what a read!
Absolutely loved everything about this book. If you enjoy satire and historical fictions you couldn't ask for a better book. Heller does a fantastic job demonstrating the hypocrisy and selfishness of military leadership.
