Does the threading on the metal have standard sizing so that it would fit a threaded dowel from the hardware store, if desired?

Yes looks like standard sizing for a wooden dowel / broom handle.

How long is the handle? It's no good if I've got to bend over to use it.

I'm six feet tall, and the handle is long enough for me to stand to do laundry in the bathtub.

Does it spin or rotate as you push it ?

Hello, This item does neither spin or rotate by itself. You provide the manual action of spinning or plunging the unit as you wash your clothes.

It looks like the plunger is made for a bucket but has anyone used it in a bathtub?

You could definitely use it in a bathtub or a smaller larger metal tub like grandma use to use. A bucket will save on water, but you're limited to load size
