IMCO is the oldest existing lighter manufacturer in the world alongside Ronson, USA. In 1907, Julius Meister founded the Austrian button and metalware factory Julius Meister & Co. in Vienna. Imco was formed from the initials. Mainly buttons for use were manufactured. After the First World War, the demand for this ended and so IMCO relocated to the manufacture of lighters from 1918, first from the injected cartridge cases. The shapes of the early IMCO lighters still show the original shape of the cartridge. The first IMCO lighter was developed in 1918-1919 and in 1922 the first patent no. 89538 could be filed. Since then, approx. 70 different lighters developed and marketed worldwide. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Austrian lighter industry was leading as the flint ('Auermet') was invented by the Austrian Auer von Welsbach. The most famous Imco lighter is the Triplex Super petrol lighter, which was developed in 1936, technically improved in the 50s and is still produced unchanged to this day. In the mid-1950s, the petrol lighter range was expanded to include the Junior and Streamline models. The production was laid from Vienna in the 60s due to the beginning production of friction wheel and piezo plastic lighters with to Tribus angle when bathing. Imco has especially established itself on the market with inclined flame lighters for pipe smokers. To this day, IMCO has produced and sold over half a billion lighters worldwide.
