This new edition of the definitive guide to Civil War battlefields is really a completely new book. While the first edition covered 60 major battlefields, from Fort Sumter to Appomattox, the second covers all of the 384 designated as the "principal battlefields" in the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission Report. As in the first edition, the essays are authoritative and concise, written by such leading historians as James M. McPherson, Stephen W. Sears, Edwin C. Bearss, James I. Robinson, Jr., and Gary W. Gallager. The second edition also features 83 new four-color maps covering the most important battles. The Civil War Battlefield Guide is an essential reference for anyone interested in the Civil War. Review: An Excellent Guide and Resource - THE CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD GUIDE has been a great resource for me. I recently read the biography of Ulysses Grant by H. W. Brands. Having this guide made such a difference in my understanding of the battles. The guide offers an enormous amount of support information beyond the maps of the battles. Many years ago, while I was stationed at the naval air training command at Millington, Tn., I had an opportunity to visit the Shiloh battlefield. That visit and the knowledge that almost 25,000 men were killed, wounded or missing at the end of the battle brought home to me the enormity of the cost of the Civil War. Now that I am retired, I read as much as I can about it. Having this guide not only helps me understand the battles from the excellent maps, but the supporting articles add even more information. Until I started using the guide, I didn't realize how many battles there were and how much of the country the war affected. When I was younger, I often thought about visiting as many of the battlegrounds as possible. I had forgotten about that dream until I saw the location information given about each of the battles. It may be time to revisit that dream. Again, this has been a great resource for me on many levels. Review: Must have Historical Guide to the Civil War Battles - This is one of the best books to have to study the civil war locations, and tour the battles. It has superb topographical maps of the battle area's. It also has more information on the battles and different topic's on the civil war. I have never been to any of the battles back east, since I have lived in the Midwest and Arizona, so I wish the book had more pictures of the area's then and now. I have talked to a few people and it is sad that we are losing some of these battlefields to land development

Not Exactly a Battlefield Guide
This book was recommended to me as a source of information on less known Civil War battles (thanks, Hal Jespersen!), and it fits splendidly to that purpose. You may see it as kind of Civil War battles encyclopedia, covering even very small confrontations with quite reasonable amount of information. People suffered and died even in minor skirmishes, and the book does a great service in preserving their memory. I knew what I was buying and I am more then happy with my purchase. But I must say the book title is misleading. The only information about the battlefield itself as it is today is a short paragraph at the end of each article, informing the location of the battlefield, the area it covers, which portion of it is privately owned and if it is open to public visitation. If you really intend to explore the battlefield area and understand the influence of the terrain to the outcome, you will need something more specific.

An amazing compilation
Thorough and diverse. Like that the many maps are topographical and show the action overlaying the action on a modern grid. Especially god for touring and not in a National Park (even there it supplements the Park Service maps.

The Civil War Battlefield Guide by Frances H. Kennedy - What a resource!
My Brother & I just took a 17 day tour of the South and as many Civil War Battlefields as we could visit in that span using this book as our primary research guide for planning the entire route. Once the direction of the route was determined, we highlighted everything on our way: Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, The Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea. I gave the book to my brother as a keepsake and have already ordered another for my use!!

For Reference Only
I was hoping this book was a little more "entertaining" (hard to use that word in reference to the Civil War) and was something with a narrative. It's not. It's strictly for reference. But it IS a great reference book. Every battle of the war is covered, sometimes in great details with excellent maps, sometimes merely in passing. I happen to find some of the smaller skirmishes to be every bit as interesting as the large and famous battles, but the book really focuses on the major actions. If you want to read a history of Civil War battles, this is not for you. But if you like to study them, this would make a valuable addition to your library.
