Variable speed vs three-speed fans
I wanted a variable speed fan as the uses are much more than a three-speed fan. The ability to adjust the fan speed--and the motor/blade volume--allows one to use this fan in everything from a baby's nursery to a garage. It's wonderful and the need to adjust the volume/speed is greater than you'd think for each individual situation. I have high 22-foot ceilings in my living room, and so much hot air is trapped up there in the winter it's crazy. So, I bought this fan and have it at about 30% of max speed pointed straight up to the ceiling (the fan tilts nicely on the robust metal stand), it's quiet enough to watch TV and not notice anything more than a dull "white noise" if I am listening for it, and the amount of air that now circulated off the hot cavern ceiling above is amazing. I sit on my couch and it's at least 6-7degrees warmer here than with the fan off. That's a lot! Percent of max speed and uses: I also use it as a gentle white noise napping fan in afternoons (15%); for cooling on my rowing and treadmill workouts (80%); for circulating air off my ceiling (30%); for speeding up clothes drying on my rack (50%); for airing out my bathroom when someone sets off a colon bomb I100%...lol...just kidding, more like 50%); for drying wet carpet (100%); for drying moldy basement (66%); for drying a wet dog (40%); for gentle air movement while you sleep (10%), etc. You'll find more uses once you have the fan and appreciate the speed variability. There are YT videos showing the electricity use of this fan, and on low power its drawing about 22 watts, and on high power it's drawing 66 watts (i.e. basically the same as a traditional incandescent 60 watt bulb). I almost never use it on highest power though unless I'm drying rugs or clothes. The noise is loud on full speed. I own many fans, including an 18-inch Patton all-metal, 3-speed industrial fan. Those are effective, but noisy. I adore the ability to adjust the speed infinitely for my needs. It's the best fan I have ever owned.

Brilliant! (except for the ultrasonic PWM noise most people can't hear)
I just got this fan from UPS about 2 hours ago - I paid for it myself, no samples or discounts. This is my first Vornado fan and I'm very impressed - it's a nice design and the range of fan speeds is incredible. I work at home and my office tends to get really warm - the best way to cool it is a fan just outside my door to push in cooler air. Most fans are just too loud and annoying, but the 723DC is big enough and can run slow enough to move significant air at whisper quiet levels. All was well until my son, who is, as we say, "on the spectrum" and has significant sensory issues, came down stairs and asked what was causing "that noise". He described it as a very high pitched noise like the flyback transformer on a CRT only louder. I couldn't imagine it being the fan so I had him go into the next room and do a blind test to see when he heard the sound. It's the fan. I had him place his ear to the transformer and the fan - and it's the fan. If you read the reviews, another customer mentioned a resonance or noise coming from the housing - I assumed he got a defective unit, but now I have an alternate theory. To my knowledge, there are two main ways to control the speed of a DC motor - either vary the voltage (more volts = more speed, etc) or send the voltage in intermittent pulses of varying length - imagine trying to dim your dining room lights by turning them on and off rapidly - that's basically what pulse width modulation is but of course it happens at very high frequencies - the advantage is that PWM circuits are very welll known and reliable, but depending on the design, they can generate noise. Only one of the 6 people in my home can hear the noise, but it's extremely disturbing to him and unfortunately, I'll probably have to send this back. We don't have pets, but dogs and some other animals also have high frequency hearing and they may hear the PWM noise as well. However, if you're over maybe 25 or so and you don't have animals or small children, it's very unlikely that you can hear this sound and I would absolutely recommend this fan to you. I called Vornado support and had the PWM epiphany while talking to them - I told the support person to ask engineering about their PWM controller and see if they can measure the ultrasonic sound. Maybe they can rework the controller, maybe it's such a rare problem that it's not worth bothering with, I don't know.

That’s pretty nice
Never had a Vornado. I was curious. Here we are. This is quite a nice fan! Simple, no smart features, one dial for control, nice. I love the continuous control. If you get a Vornado, make sure it has the full continuous control knob. Even at its lowest setting the fan is moving a little air. It’s very quiet and just has a slight fan motor buzz. At 1/4 or 1/2 power you can just hear the air flowing. It’s loud at full throttle, but I doubt you’d have a need for it unless you’re clearing out smoke because it’s got some REAL power. I’m coming from a fan that kinda just moved air to one that’s moving photos and plants from across the room. Very impressive. The price is a little high, but the quality is there. Good metal stand, solid plastics, nice smooth dial and a separate power cable which I appreciate. Made in the USA of USA and imported parts. My favorite part, the WARRANTY. 10 years. My bedroom fan, it’s awesome, but its warranty is 1 year. 1.5 years now that I extended the warranty. 10 whole years with the USA made Vornado! That’s confidence in their product and I’m confident it’ll outlast that mark no problem.

THIS FAN IS A KEEPER!!! *updated after 365 I'm still 100% happy!
just got this fan today. it's pretty amazing. QUIET QUIET QUIET unless you turn it up to full blast and then it definitely has a hum but it goes FAST! so i'd expect to hear it on full blast. no noise at all turned up to 2/3 power and produces a nice COOL current of 'wind'. Where I live i don't have air conditioning and the temps have been in the upper 90's. needless to say, my interior home temp goes up to 80+. Upon receiving the fan today i set it up (EASY and fast) and put it to the test....immediately figured out it WORKS BEAUTIFULLY and feels cooling WAY MORE SO than turning on my central fan that blows from ceiling vents (nasty hot air pushes down--ick) THIS FAN blows the cooler lower air and makes my space much more comfortable. I love that it's not supposed to cost a lot and be energy efficient. THAT as well as the 10 year warranty and the vornado name made me comfortable shelling out 150 for a fan. No problems, great fast delivery w amazon prime and super fast to assemble. THIS FAN IS A KEEPER UPDATE 8-11-17 I LOVE this fan. It's still working great. Puts out a cool stream of air that is comfortable blowing on me. Prior to this I used tower fans because I am not a fan of traditional fans that blow directly at you-- though that may sound strange to you--some of my fellow sensitive folks will know the sensation of those types of fans. Going strong I use this fan nightly and it's fabulous worth every penny.

Powerful, energy efficient, but not quiet. Tilt mechanism could be better
This is a powerful, USA-made fan and the DC motor consumes much less power than the AC model. Works great when pointed upward to move air in a room with high ceilings. Variable control is a must, once you use it you'll not want anything else. Fan is super sturdy and easy to clean. The stand this fan is attached to leaves much to be desired. While the powder coated steel is very sturdy and good looking, it's lacking a lot of finishing touch. To tilt the fan upward or downward, you have to really put a lot of force into it. Because the mechanism appears to be just metal on plastic with no lubrication, it can make an awful screeching if moved at the right speed. There's nowhere to loosen or tighten it. You'd think for $200, it could be built with a smoothly operating mechanism to allow tilting. Although the fan's energy efficient and moves a lot of air, when operated from 80-100% it is not quiet at all. After about 5-6 months the sealed bearing started making noise, but hasn't worsened. It's most audible when running the fan from 5-20%, which is unfortunate because I can’t use it at night. That being said, I still use it year-round and it is certainly worth the extra money over the AC model.

Very effective in moving air flow and cooling upstairs by at least 10-15 degrees.
VERY EFFECTIVE! I have to say I wasn’t sure what to expect but after reading a review that sounded similar to my situation, I took the plunge AND GLAD I DID. We live in Scottsdale, AZ and our upstairs A/C went out during the hottest time of the year. We live in a 2-story home with our master bedroom overviews garage the dining room area...sort of an open loft look. We effectively placed this fan so that it allowed cool air flow from one of the A/C vents downstairs to flow to the upper level. I thought during a 108 degree day outside and at minimum 95 degrees upstairs in our Master that it would take several hours before seeing if it wld even cool the upstairs enough to sleep in our bed. I was AMAZED/shocked that It did so in about 30 minutes. I initially had the Vornado on high and I won’t deny...it was a bit loud (not overbearing though) however as it cooled the upstairs Master area SO QUICKLY, we were able to turn it down to low and still remain cool upstairs to be able to sleep in our own bed extremely, extremely comfortably. Additionally, it was effective without forcing our downstairs A/C system to run more than it normally does during the summer. If you are having a similar issue, don’t think twice about making this purchase. You will NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! I am so glad we did. It saved us and allowed us to sleep in our bed vs an uncomfortable couch. Added Plus: energy smart. It does not have a remote however for this type of situation, you don’t need it.

Not worth the $$$
Seville Classics tower fans are much quieter and they oscilate. Seville moves just as much air as the Vornado. This was a disappointing purchase. I might return it. For the price I was really expecting something that moved air efficiently. Buy a wind machine fan instead. It moves air better than the vornado. This vornado is extremely lound - so is the wind machine. The vornado forces the air into a stream that is very small to where a wind machine blows the full area of the fan. Really folks - this vornado is expensive, extremely noisy, and just a waste of hard earned money. If your frugal buy a wind machine. If your in the middle buy a set of Seville Classics with remotes. A little high priced but quieter, oscilates, moves air very well, and they are better looking as well.

Great fan for my residence
The upper floor of my home gets hot in the summer but the lower floor is completely sheltered and stays very cool, and there is an open channel between the floors via stairway. I use this fan to circulate cool air upstairs from the lower floor of my home. After running the fan my upstairs thermostat temperature reading drops 2 degrees without me turning on the air conditioning. I live in northern Nevada and I run my AC less during the summer because of this fan, and some summer days I don't need the AC at all. I'm trying to maximize airflow so I always have the fan at top speed when it's on. The fan is audible, but it's white noise and doesn't bother me. The fan is listed as "Energy Smart" and I'm confident that running the fan is more efficient than running the AC, but I don't have information on how much power the fan actually uses.

Great fan. very expensive
Excellent fan. Probably the most powerful fan I have ever been in front of. It can really put out some serious CFM. the construction of the fan is very solid. it is made in USA. the casing is a matte ish plastic and very sturdy. The knob to adjust power is very smooth, unlike other fans it is just Off and Maximum and any level between. Medium/Max (7/10) gets pretty loud but as others have said, its just the Air moving (literally impossible to move the amount of air so fast wuthout making noise). There are no other features. no sleep timer, no oscillation (not needed). no auto on/off. just point and power. Unfortunately I cant justify the high cost for a fan (226$ CAD) and had to return the product. It really is a beast of a fan though

Funciona bien y silencioso a baja velocidad

High quality product. Great value.
I like the variable speed control and the very sturdy base. Looks and feels like a high quality product that will last a long time, and the 10 year warranty ensures that. Very quiet from low to medium power, which is enough power to circulate my space comfortably. Max power is a bit too noisy for my liking, but too be fair it is mostly wind noise from the air moving so strongly. The motor is very quiet and is easy to ignore. Overall great value for the price.

Puissant
Définitivement trop cher et trop bruyant, mais très solide et très puissant, je ne peux plus m en passer. A vous de voir, mais je ne retournerai pas aux ventilateurs ordinaires inefficaces quand il fait chaud.
