The important Roman writer Suetonius (69 AD - 140 AD) wrote the eight-volume Vita Caesarum Libri VIII (Eight Books on the Life of the Emperors). In it Suetonius provides ins into the life of the Roman emperors, from Julius Caeser to Domitian. Gaius Julius, who bore the epithet Caesar, played a decisive role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into an empire. He is the eponym of the title Caesar, which is used as Emperor and Tsar to this day. Caesar himself was appointed Dictator Perpetuus (dictator for life) by the senate. Under Octavian, who became known as Augustus (the sublime), the name finally changed to the title. Julius Caesar was also the first Roman regent to be depicted on coins during his lifetime. This tradition was continued by the subsequent rulers, who carried the coins with the portraits of the Caesars out into the vastness of the Roman Empire and spread them there. Thus the portraits of the rulers became known throughout the empire, which reached its greatest expansion under Emperor Trajan. This collection includes twelve silver Denarii, each depicting a portrait of one of the first twelve Roman Caesars. Each of these coins is almost 2000 years old as well as being a handmade specimen.
