What size are the loops it makes?

Very small loops - maybe 3mm. I am not happy with this tool at all. Loops are too small for my needs. About 1/3 of the time, it doesn't cut the wire. Also, the loop is not completely closed so you still have to use pliers. I am much happier with my 'groovy' pliers from Wolf Tools - one jaw is round and one is like chain plier except with 3 grooves to make 3 different sizes of loops.

Have had it for 6-months and today the spring came apart. Not sure if it broke or the spring just snapped loose. Can this be fixed?

Mine continues to work well. I'll be a little more careful with it however.

can you make it so that the tool does not cut off your excess wire ? can the excess wire be left in place and trimmed to length with nippers ?

The cutter trims the excess automatically. You would have to modify the tool to change that.
