Dari-English/English-Dari Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) [Awde, Nicholas, Sarwam, Asmetullah] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Dari-English/English-Dari Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) Review: Must read for Dari learners - This coupled with the youtube channel afganistan online made learning Dari much easier. I learned the alphabet, numbers, common greetings and how to pronounce everything better with the videos. My interedt was mainly in the script of dari but the romanticized book is a necicery step for me. It took me a week to learn all of that and thats when im writing this. Im looking forward to all the connections and friends i will be making in the near future ♡ Review: hugely helpful at the start - Well organized with pronunciation guide, then dictionaries (both ways)l then the phrasebook. I want to help with medical care of Afghan refugees, so I appreciate the two sections on health and emergencies. While I am a grammar prude, what's in here is adequate for saying what I need and understanding SOME of the answers. This book makes for a quick start; I'll spend the $$ on the more complete Pimsleur course once I'm more comfortable with this one.

Perfect for beginners and useful for intermediate learners
There is a small minority of people for whom a new alphabet, like the Persian alphabet, just clicks. For the other 99% of us, it's really helpful to have a dictionary like this, with words spelled out in our Roman alphabet. You can transition into a more traditional Dari/English dictionary once you are comfortable conversing in the language. After, that's pretty much what kids do. Almost all kids develop basic speaking skills before they learn to use the alphabet. Also, I recommend this book if you are going to be interacting with Afghans. Don't buy a standard Persian/Farsi dictionary because it will favor vocabulary from Iran. The difference between Afghan Persian (officially referred to as Dari, though Afghans pretty much never call it that) and Iranian Persian (referred to as Farsi) is about the same as the difference between American English and Scottish English, or the difference between Australian English and Canadian English. In formal writing, and in educated speech, it's pretty much all the same. The problem is, the more everyday or informal the language is, the more they are different. If you learn too many Iranian words then you will just be confused when you start interacting with Afghans. Bottom line, get a book like this which focuses on Dari, the Persian used in Afghanistan.

Excellent product
It's difficult to find good Dari language products. This book is not an English-Dari dictionary (nor is it intended to be), but it does contain a quite in-depth catalogue of common phrases, expressions, and situational requirements. I'm very happy with it for language purposes, and the book is well-manufactured. Definitely worth the money.

Tremendous help with teaching English to an adult
I am tutoring an Afghan woman In English, who, because of the Taliban, is illiterate in her own language, Dari. Since she does not read in her own language, I am heavily reliant upon pictures and the second half of this little dictionary. We have a good laugh with my Dari pronunciation but I have gotten better. She is remarkable in that she (even with 3 small children) studies, is always prepared and determined to learn English. Verbs are the most challenging to teach (I can often find pictures for nouns) and the dictionary has been a big help.

NOT Dari to English. There is no Dari in this book.
If you are an English language person, trying to learn Dari speech, this book is probably great. If you are a Dari person, trying to learn English, this book is almost completely useless. Other than pg 24 "The Dari Alphabet," there is zero Dari in this book. This book should not be called "Dari-English" it should be called "Dari Phonetic - English" For example, if a native Dari speaker said "gawak" to you, you can go to this book, in the "Dari - English" section, and look up "gawak" and you'll be like "Oh, they said Snail." But if i said "Snail" to a Dari person, they could AT MOST look up "Snail" and it says "Gawak," but if they don't know how to pronunciate English letters, that's useless to them. Great book to LEARN Dari. Useless book to be Dari and learn English.

Concise, compact, useful
Nice concise dictionary, also includes a useful concise history of Afghanistan in just a few pages. Compact enough to fit into a large pocket.

DOESN'T CONTAIN ACTUAL DARI WORDS
DOESN'T ACTUALLY HAVE DARI WORDS IN IT. This is JUST English transliteration, which makes correct pronunciation and actual learning very difficult. If you want to truly learn the language, this is not the book to get!

I have been learning Dari for a few months after meeting some Afghans in my community. With some basic understanding of Dari, this dictionary has been super useful to continuing my learning of Dari. It is not easy to find a Dari-English/English-Dari Dictionary! There is a lot of Persian material but it is different from Dari. The book contains a pronunciation guide, a Dari-English Dictionary, an English-Dari Dictionary, and a Dari Phrasebook which includes things like Etiquette, Introductions, Travel, Food and Drink, Shopping, Education, Weather, The Body, Time and Dates, Numbers, and more! Highly recommend this book.

Für alle Phrasen gibt's eine Umschrift. Für Anfänger als auch Nicht-Anfänger geeignet. Auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen.

Dictionnaire complet. Je trouve seulement dommage que les mots écrit en dari le soient en phonétique et non dans l'alphabet persan.

まず見た瞬間手ごろなサイズ、手にとってパラパラ、あれ!ダリ語が書いてない。自分で書くためのテキスト!?。宿題付の辞書だったか。がっかりしたり、やる気を出したり。この値段じゃ仕方がないか。それにしてもダリ語なしのダリ語の説明はあったのかな?

Very good and usefull. Good that the words in dari are written in a way you could read the letters and understand how they are pronounced in the same time. It helps to be familiar with grammar before reading this book. I love the book!
