Would gel pens smudge??

If you have the type of pastel gel pens that show up well on black card (I use uni ball signo angelic pastel and pentel milky pastel gel pens from Amazon) they write perfectly on these, they do need about 10 mins to dry but after that they are smudge proof. I love them!

Are they easy to write on?

Easy to write on yes. The choice of pen is more important as they can smudge, depending on the ink used, unless the ink has dried properly. I found a thin permanent marker for writing on CDs worked perfectly with no drying time needed.

I want to use these for my books with gel pens. Do gel pens work on these sticky notes?

Yes pastel gel pens designed for writing on black paper or card have the type of ink in them that will write on this notes perfectly and are smudge proof after 10 minutes. (I use Signo Uni-Ball Angelic Pastel gel pens, the best!)
